New Saracens Director of Rugby Eddie Jones has strengthened his squad for the 2008/09 season by capturing outside centre Ben Jacobs from Super 14 finalists Waratahs.

The 26-year-old will joins the North London club on a three year contract and will add significant strength in depth to the centres.

The versatile Jacobs has played in a number of positions in his Super Rugby career since his debut against the Crusaders in 2004 but it’s been in the past two years at outside centre where he has caught the eye.

Jacobs, who has an English wife, was named the Waratahs best back in 2007 when he started nine out of 13 matches in their Super 14 campaign.

This season he’s featured seven times in the Waratahs successful march to the finals where they face the Crusaders at the weekend in New Zealand and he has been capped at A level by Australia.

The arrival of 6ft 2in Jacobs adds to the competition for the outside centre spot at Saracens with regular starter Kevin Sorrell and utility backs Francisco Leonelli and Rodd Penney all capable of taking the No.13 jersey.

‘Ben is a good solid rugby player and is a real team man,’ explained Saracens Director of Rugby Jones on the Club’s website.

‘He’s a strong runner, very good defensively and works very hard at his game ‘ he’s very much in the Kevin Sorrell mode. His arrival adds to the depth at outside centre and it now means we have four players competing for that spot.

‘Historically, outside centre has been a difficult position to fill when Sorrell has been out injured for any length of time so it was important that we added to the competition in that area.

‘Ben is still only 26 so he has a lot of rugby left in front of him and his performances for the Waratahs over the past few seasons have proved he can perform at the highest level.’
