The Sharks may be without several of their frontline Springbok backline stars for their opening Currie Cup encounter against Western Province on Saturday afternoon, but have still been able to name an impressive team.

No less than seven Springboks still feature in the match-day 22, with the forward pack especially laden with experienced personnel.

In the backline, Rory Kockott, Odwa Ndungane, Riaan Swanepoel, Andries Strauss and Stefan Terblanche are also no strangers to the Sharks jersey and will have a big job in keeping the impressive Western Province backs at bay.

It will be a baptism of fire, though, for flyhalf Guy Cronje who was battling with a hip injury earlier this week, but has been named to start in the crucial pivot position.

Sharks coach John Plumtree, said he knew it was going to be a tough encounter first up but expressed confidence they could pull through if they stuck to their guns.

“Province will know they need to front up physically against the Sharks, especially our forwards.

“They have plenty of speed amongst their backs and players with a fair amount of Super 14 experience, we just need to make sure we’re in the fight the whole way.

“The players know they need to stick together and when we get into their half, build pressure and get some points.”

The Sharks:

Stefan Terblanche; Odwa Ndungane, Andries Strauss, Riaan Swanepoel, Luzuko Vulindlu; Guy Cronje, Rory Kockott; Keegan Daniel, Jean Deysel, Jacques Botes, Johann Muller (capt), Steven Sykes, Jannie du Plessis, Craig Burden, Deon Carstens.

Replacements – Skipper Badenhorst, Patric Cilliers, Albert van den Berg, Justin Downey/Ryan Kankowski, Charl McLeod, Monty Dumond, Chris Jordaan.
