Sevens star joins Eagles for Currie Cup

South Western Districts coach Joihann Lerm has announced that former Free State flanker and Springbok Sevens star Schalk van der Merwe has joined the SWD Eagles.

An excited Lerm said he was over the moon to get the services of Van der Merwe who was called up after a back injury to No 8 and regular captain, Ryno van der Merwe.

According to Lerm, Ryno van der Merwe’s injury is more serious than expected and that he could be sidelined for another few weeks.

Lerm said newboy Van der Merwe is training at No 8 and would be considered in this position for the Eagles’ first First League match against the Border Bulldogs in East London on July 17.

Ryno’s expierence will be surely missed, but Schalk van der Merwe is as expierenced having also represented the Golden Lions.

With Ryno van der Merwe not being available yet, Bevin Fortuin (pictured) will act as captain.

“Bevin is experienced and a popular team member. I am convinced he will do a good job for us,” Lerm said.
