Otago born and bred, Ben Smith, has re-signed with the ORFU for a further 2 years thus ensuring his availability for Otago and the Highlanders through to the end of 2012.

23 year old Smith, who grew up in Dunedin, plays his club rugby for Green Island. He is currently completing his Batchelor of Physical Education degree at the University of Otago.

Smith has played 24 games for Otago since debuting in 2007. His first appearance for the Highlanders was in 2009 and he has been integral part of the team over the past two seasons.

He was selected for the 2009 end of year All Black’s tour, making his test debut against Italy. Smith commented “I really enjoy playing my rugby for the teams that represent where I’m from and I’m looking forward to giving it my all for the next 2 years”.

Smith is currently in Auckland training with the All Blacks and then playing for the New Zealand Barbarians against the NZ Maori’s.

ORFU Chairman Wayne Graham added “It’s a very positive sign and it is good to have further news that our home grown talent is staying where they are developed from”.

Highlanders Chairman Ross Laidlaw commented “the Highlanders are extremely pleased that Ben has chosen to re-sign with Otago therefore ensuring that one of our high quality players continues to be available to represent the region”.
