South Africa beat Argentina in Salta

Out of the last five Rugby Championship matches between Argentina’s Pumas and South Africa’s Springboks the South Africans have won four and drawn one.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick off.

Handre Pollard kicks off and the match is underway.

2.00: Argentina make a strong start to the match pushing the Springboks back into their 22. They win a line out and attack the Boks 10m out.

3.0: Penalty to Argentina. Nicolas Sanchez takes the kick and nails it. Argentina lead.

5.00: Argentina breakout and look to be away on the wing but there is a forward pass.

6.00: Penalty to Argentina from the scrum. Sanchez takes the kick but misses.

8.00: The Pumas continue to pin the Springboks in their half with kicks and attacking runs. Willie le Roux spots some space so he kicks behind the Pumas who get back and kick the ball into touch.

10.00: Penalty to South Africa. Handre Pollard takes the shot and levels the scores.

11.00: Willie le Roux tries to break through Argentina’s defence but he is pushed into touch. The Pumas take a quick line out and get the ball into the Boks 22. Sanchez goes for a drop goal and nails it. Pumas lead.

13.00: Before the match can continue there is a call for TMO review of a tip tackle but there are communication problems so they have to play on.

14.00: The Springboks get their best attacking spell as they press the Pumas back in their 22. The Pumas knock the ball on as they turn the ball over and try to run it out. SA scrum.

16.00: The Springbok front row collapses so Argentina get a penalty. They kick for touch.

18.00: Penalty to Argentina from the scrum again so they take the quick tap but knock on. Bismarck du Plessis gets a talking to by Steve Walsh.

19.00: The scrum has to be reset. Twice. Penalty to South Africa from the scrum this time. Pollard kicks for touch.

21.00: There is a break in play as the teams get some water. We resume with a line out to the Springboks. They win the line out and try to form the maul. The Pumas defend it but South Africa get the advantage. Pollard kicks for the wing but we go back for a penalty for collapsing the maul.

22.00: Pollard takes the penalty kick and levels the scores.

25.00: Argentina go through 7 phases on attack and they get to the tryline. The Boks keep them out and the Pumas go wide and this time Manuel Montero scores. TRY!

26.00: Nicolas Sanchez takes the conversion kick from the touchline and nails it.

28.00: Penalty in front of the posts to South Africa. Pollard lines up the kick. He nails it cutting the gap to four.

30.00: Argentina enjoy quick ball on attack in the Springboks half. The Boks manage to keep them out of their 22 but it’s all the Pumas.

31.00: Against the flow of play South Africa (Pienaar) get a boot to a loose ball and Habana chases and pounces on the ball and scores. TRY!

32.00: Pollard slots the conversion and South Africa lead for the first time. There is another break in play as a Pumas player gets some medical help after being shoulder charged by Juan Smith. No action against Smith and the player continues.

34.00: Tomas Cubelli comes on for Martin Landajo. The Pumas kick for touch, the Boks win the line out and kick to the Pumas who attack. They almost get through but lose the ball and the Boks kick upfield. The Pumas kick it back and then SA kick it out.

36.00: Pablo Matera has to come off with his arm in a sling. The Pumas win their line out and they kick upfield. South Africa make the mark.

38.00: Penalty just inside the SA half to Argentina. Sanchez takes the shot but misses.

40.00: The Pumas attack as the siren sounds. They go through the phases and make ground steadily. After 5 phases they go wide but knock on.

It’s half time.

The half time score was Argentina 13 South Africa 16

Nicolas Sanchez kicks off and the second half is underway.

43.00: Penalty from the scrum again to the Pumas. They kick for touch.

45.00: Argentina kick deep into SA territory and Habana tries to run the ball out. The Pumas catch him.

46.00: The Pumas win a line out and attack in the Boks 22. They go through several phases and Tomas Cubelli gets through but is tackled as he goes over. The TMO is called in to check the grounding. The wording is “we believe a try has been scored so unless you can tell me why…” The try is awarded. The Pumas lead again.

47.00: Sanchez slots the conversion. The crowd has come alive.

51.00: Argentina go on the attack again just outside the Bok 22.  Joaquin Tuculet races for the corner and beats two defenders and gets the ball down. We go to the TMO to check. The TRY is awarded.

51.00: Sanchez takes the conversion kick from the touchline and this one goes wide.  

53.00: South Africa win a line out in their 22. They kick for touch but fail to find it. The Pumas kick it back and regather it. They get the ball to the 5m line and continue the attack. Penalty to the Pumas for offside. They will kick.

55.00: Sanchez slots the penalty to extend the lead.

58.00: The Springboks kick for territory and it goes to Juan Martin Hernandez who kicks it back and finds touch.

59.00: South Africa enjoy some strong attacking ball and they get the ball to about 10m out. They attack and Cornal Hendricks goes for the corner and looks to have scored. We go to the TMO to check. The grounding is fine but could be short. The try is awarded and South Africa are back in the game.

59.00: Morne Steyn takes the conversion kick and just sneaks it in. Francois Hougaard has replaced Ruan Pienaar.

60.00: The Boks kick for the corner and chase and the ball just rolls out on the 5m line. The Pumas knock the ball on at the line out so the Springboks will have a scrum about 10m out.

62.00: The scrum has to be reset which eats up time.

63.00: Penalty to Argentina from the scrum again. The Pumas kick for touch.

64.00: Argentina win the line out and attack. There looks to have been a small knock on but we play on. The Pumas go for a drop goal but Sanchez misses.

65.00: The Springboks go on the attack and they go through 8 phases and then kick wide for Habana but the ball goes into touch. We go back for a penalty. Steyn kicks for the corner and the line out.

68.00: The Springboks win the line out and drive the maul over the line and Marcell Coetzee scores the TRY! The scores are level.

69.00: Steyn slots the conversion and the Boks lead.

72.00: Penalty for offside/late tackle to Argentina. They will kick for posts from just inside their half.

73.00: Marcelo Bosch takes the kick. It’s big and it’s there. Argentina lead.

76.00: Penalty to South Africa. Steyn takes the kick and nails it. The Boks lead again.

78.00: The Springboks try to play for territory and Steyn kicks for touch but he kicks it out on the full. Pumas will have a line out inside the Boks half after a break in play for Frans Malherbe who is helped from the field.

79.00: Argentina win the line out and use the maul. They go wide to the backs but the ball slows. The Pumas will get the put in at a scrum.

80.00: The siren sounds. We will have the scrum.

81.00: Argentina win the scrum and send the ball wide to the backs but the pass goes into touch. That’s it. The Springboks win.
