South Africa beat Australia in Rugby Championship




The Rugby Championship returns on Saturday for Round 5 when South Africa’s Springboks host Australia’s Wallabies in Pretoria.

Morne Steyn kicks off and the match is underway.

Australia show some intent down the wing but the Springboks keep them out.

4.00: South Africa get a penalty advantage but Morne Steyn goes for a drop goal and nails it.

7.00: Penalty to Australia. Bernard Foley takes the kick and levels the scores.

12.00: Australia go through the phases on the half way line but they make little ground.

13.00: Michael Hooper gets through a gap and offloads to Reece Hodge who almost gets through. He recycles and Australia move the ball to the middle and Scott Sio goes in under the posts !  TRY!

14.00: Bernard Foley pops over the conversion kick and Australia lead. South Africa battled to keep up in defence when Australia moved the ball at pace in that move.

15.00: South Africa try to hit back as they work the ball into the Australian 22 but handling lets them down and the ball goes to ground.

16.00: Australia win the first scrum of the match and then as they recycle the ball South Africa concede a penalty.

17.00: Australia win the line out and work the ball to the middle where they kick upfield. Both teams kick the ball back and Cooper finds touch. South Africa’s put in near the half way line.

20.00: South Africa try to clear the ball from a ruck but Francois Hougaard knocks on giving Australia a scrum. The scrum collapses. Straight down.

22.00: Penalty to Australia. Hodge takes the shot but JUST misses as they ball goes under the crossbar from well inside his half.

24.00: Penalty to South Africa against Sean McMahon. Steyn lines up the posts.

25.00: Steyn takes the host and nails it. He knows this stadium so well.

28.00: South Africa win a line out and Rudy Paige kicks deep. Israel Folau kicks the ball back and Pat Lambie boots it straight into touch.

29.00: The ball is chipped ahead after SA steal it at the breakdown and Francois Hougaard chases. South Africa get caught offside so Australia have a penalty. They take the line out.

31.00: After the line out South Africa win a penalty. Steyn kicks for touch.

32.00: South Africa win the line out and attack down the wing. Hougaard makes ground but then the ball is turned over and kicked ahead. South Africa get back and set up the attack. Strauss runs from the side of the ruck and breaks away. He offloads to Bryan Habana who kicks ahead and is blocked by Israel Folau who is yellow carded for obstruction.

34.00: Steyn slots the penalty.

35.00: After the restart South Africa run the ball at Australia. They get the ball to the 22 where they loose the ball. Hodge clears the ball back into SA’s half near the 10m line.

37.00: After a line out by South Africa tension overflows. After the whistle Oupa Mohoje is clearly seen throwing a punch so could miss next week’s match. The Ref has a talk to both captains. Penalty to South Africa, Steyn clears.

38.00: South Africa win the line out. They run at Australia and go wide. There is a knock on but they had the advantage so get called back.

39.00: Steyn takes the penalty kick and nails it as the siren sounds for half time.

It is half time.

Australia kick off and the second half is underway.

42.00: South Africa kick deep as Folau is still in the bin but Dane Haylett-Petty is back there and begins the attack.

43.00: Australia press forward and put South Africa under pressure on their 5m line and Cooper almost gets through.  SA hold on and just manage to keep them out. Folau comes back on. SA scrum.

44.00: SA win the scrum on their 5m line. It’s scrappy though and they have to scramble to clear the ball.

45.00: Lood de Jager who has just comes on flattens Rob Simmons as he charges forward. The double whistle goes. There is more concern for Bryan Habana though. Willie le Roux comes on to replace him. Simmons goes for a head check.

47.00: Free kick to SA. Steyn kicks to Australia who run at SA and De Jager is caught offside.

49.00: Hodge takes the penalty kick but misses.

51.00: Another penalty to Australia for offside. Hodge takes the kick and this one he misses as well.

53.00: Samu Kerevi comes off and is replaced by Tevita Kuridrani.

55.00: South Africa move the ball wide. Australia shut the attack down and kick upfield, Le Roux boots the ball back and the ball goes backwards and forwards with South Africa winning the territory battle. Kriel comes on for Mohoje. Sio comes off for Australia and is replaced by Hanson.

56.00: Jaco Kriel makes an immediate impact down the wing but he also slips a foot in touch. Rudy Paige has taken a blow and will have to come off. Willem Alberts comes on as his replacement. Hougaard to 9 and Alberts appears to be on the wing !

57.00: Australia win a penalty and kick for touch. They win the line out and attack SA in their half. As they press forward they lose the ball forward in the tackle.

59.00: Scrum penalty to South Africa – scrum collapsing. Steyn will have a shot at posts.  He misses.

61.00: After the restart Australia get the ball back from a kick and counter attack. Haylett-Petty starts it and the Wallabies go through 8 phases and get to the 5m line.

62.00: South Africa turn the ball over and Le Roux clears.

65.00: South Africa run the ball after a scrum but Lambie loses the ball forward.

67.00: Still no change in the score from half time. Australia on the attack in South Africa’s half. Six phases then 7. South Africa turn the ball over and get the scrum put in.

68.00: Sefanaia Naivalu comes on to make his debut replacing Dane Haylett-Petty.

69.00: South Africa win the scrum and boot the ball into touch. Australia win the line out but pass the ball forward.

71.00: Penalty to South Africa from the scrum. Steyn kicks for touch.

72.00: South Africa win the line out and run at Australia.  They lose a little ground but recycle and continue the attack through six phases but they pass the ball forward.

73.00: Penalty from the breakdown to South Africa. Steyn lines up the posts.

75.00: Steyn slots the conversion and extends the lead.

77.00 : Scrum put in on the half way line to South Africa. Nick Phipps is on for Will Genia.

78.00: Penalty to SA. They tap and go. As SA work the ball forward Steyn sends another drop goal over. SA lead by 8.

80.00: The siren sounds, SA kick the ball into touch.

Thats it South Africa have won.
