Southern Kings beat Rebels in Port Elizabeth

on

South Africa’s Southern Kings have returned home from their tour of Australia with confidence after they beat the Waratahs last weekend.

The Rebels will have some confidence too as they held they Sharks to a draw in Durban last weekend.

However, these two sides have only managed three wins between themselves this season and after the Aussies’display in Durban, who knows what we could get in PE?

The teams are out on the field.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

BEEP! We are underway in Port Elizabeth. Lionel Cronje gets the game started.

2.00: the kings have started well, win a penalty and kick to the corner.

4.00: The kings are on the attack inside the Rebels 22; they win another penalty and will kick at goal.

5.00: PENALTY Lionel Cronje! First blood to the Southern Kings.

7.00: The Rebels take the ball 13 phases but Nic Stirzaker knocks the ball on at the back of a ruck. The visitors showed good patience in the build up and the Kings are let off.

9.00: We are having scrum issues early on in PE. Already a few reset scrums.

10.00: Ben Volavola puts in a wonderful tactical kick to pin the Kings deep inside their 22.

13.00: The Rebels have a scrum inside the Kings half. they go wide but lose the ball into touch. It was a forward pass first and so the Kings will have a scrum near the touch-line.

16.00: The Kings have a lineout inside their half. The ball needs drying and is slippery from the early autumn dew.

17.00: The hosts are trying to play but can’t stop making handling errors.

19.00: TRY Wandile Mjekevu! It started with Makazole Mapimpi’s break, he offloads to Luzuko Vulindlu in support. The move almost breaks down but, somehow, the Kings keep the ball alive and Lionel Cronje’s grubber, in behind the defence, is collected by the winger and he goes over in the corner.

20.00: Cronje does not add the conversion.

23.00: The kings are attacking with intensity and have the visitors under pressure. Somehow, they lose the ball and the Rebels get some relief.

24.00: Nic Stirzaker is being checked by the medical staff and the players get a breather.

27.00: The Rebels win a penalty, just inside the Kings’ 22, and will take a shot at goal.

28.00: PENALTY Reece Hodge! The visitors are on the board.

30.00: Andisa Ntsila makes another break – boy, he’s having a good game – but the Rebels win the battle at the breakdown and the Aussies get a penalty.

31.00: The Rebels are having the better of the possession and territory – both more than 60 percent – and are slowly, getting a foothold in this match.

32.00: Tom English makes metres and bashes his way past defenders. But, the referee pings him for not rolling away after the tackle and Kings clear.

33.00: The Kings get a penalty inside the Rebels’ half and Cronje calls for the tee.

35.00: PENALTY! Cronje extends his team’s lead.

37.00: The hosts are keeping the Rebels deep inside their half. The game is very scrappy.

39.00: Marius van der Westhuizen has called on the TMO to check for a deliberate knock on against Justin Forwood. Looks like there is nothing in it. Penalty? That is a curious decision.

40.00: Hodge kicks to touch and the Rebels will have one last opportunity on the attack.

42.00: The Rebels keep possession for 15 phases … and they lose it forward. The Kings survive and that’s half-time.

The half-time score was Kings 11 Rebels 3

BEEP! BEEP! We are back underway in the Eastern Cape.

43.00: TRY Martin Bezuidenhout! Wow! It all started with another break by Makazole Mapimpi. The winger burst into the Rebels’ half and bought time with a roll and place after being tackled on the 22. Berton Klaasen support run kept the move going and, after being tackled near the Rebels try-line, the hooker picked up the ball at the back of the ruck and crashed over.

44.00; Cronje adds the two points and the home team have breathing space.

47.00: The Australian’s have woken up and are camped inside the Kings 22. But, some good work at the breakdown sees the hosts win the ball and clear.

48.00: some changes being made by both coaches and the players get a little rest. The Kings have a three-score lead: can they hang on?

49.00: Andisa Ntsila with another break in midfield. Lionel Cronje joins him in support but the move breaks down when the second phase is lost forward. Cronje looked to injure his knee but, it seems to be a concussion. Anyway, he is off.

50.00: Scrum to the visitors.

53.00: The crowd is in full voice in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. They are willing their team over the line. It is the visitors with possession and on the front foot.

55.00: The Rebels’ territory and possession percentage has increased since half-time and is almost at 70 percent for both. They are not doing anything with the ball and the Kings are defending with ease.

58.00: TRY Tyler Paul! Ben Volavola slips as he attempts to collect a bouncing ball from a stray lineout. Louis Schreuder gathers and sends the flanker away for an easy score, from 5 metres out. That might be the ball game.

59.00: The conversion is missed but the Kings’ lead is 20 points and three converted tries.

62.00: Chris Cloete is penalised at the ruck and has a scuffle with an opponent.

63.00: TRY Pieter-Steyn de Wet! It’s another try for the Kings. A breakout from their own half is stopped short of the goal line when Masixole Banda is tackled. The Kings send it wide and De Wet sells a dummy, cuts inside and scores under the posts. Wow! Great try!

64.00: De Wet converts his own try and the lead is 27 points.

68.00: Sefa Naivalu goes close but the bounce of the ball is not kind for the winger. The kings are making their final changes as the clock ticks down. Good effort by the Kings.

70.00: TRY Makazole Mapimpi! The winger gets his seventh try in eight games for the Kings. It is well deserved as he has been outstanding tonight. The Kings sent the ball through the hands and, eventually, the visitors ran out of numbers out wide.

71.00: De Wet extends the lead with the conversion.

75.00: The Kings are playing like the Harlem Globetrotters now; confidence is high and their opponent, long since vanquished, is defeated.

79.00: TRY Masixole Banda! The fullback is on the act now. He ghosted through a non-existent Rebels defence and this has turned into a rout.

80.00: De Wet slots from the corner and that is some history made in PE.
