The issue of whether the Southern Spears will play in the 2007 Super14 should be resolved after this Friday’s presidential elections in Cape Town. There is a big bone of contention over the relgation system.

In theory, the team that finishes last out of the South African teams will be relegated to make way for the Southern Spears.

South Africa’s big five Super 14 rugby teams disagree that this should happen and many are said to feel that the Spears dont deserve the position. The Spears however are adamant that they will play in next year’s competition and are preparing for promotion.

A few warm up matches against South Africa’s other Super 14 teams have seen them getting walloped and they are now in a three-match series against the Kenyan national team.

On the weekend the Kenyans scored the opening try of this weekend’s match and it looked like it was all going to go pera shaped again for the Spears but in the end the Spears stuck the Kenyans away with a 53-10 victory.

The matches against the Kenyans are part of an extensive program to prepare the Spears for their entry into the Super 14. The two teams meet again in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, with the third match set for Nairobi early next month.

With two weeks gone all five South African franchises participating Super 14 competition find themselves in the middle of the log after one victory and a defeat each. Relegation is still very possible for all of them.
