Spies must wait longer

Bulls coach Frans Ludeke will not pick Springbok No 8 Pierre Spies for the Bulls’ first Super 14 match against the Stormers next Saturday.

In fact, it is still uncertain when Spies will make his return to the field after he was withdrawn from the World Cup squad with a lung ailment.

It was reported in Beeld that the results of the tests were expected on Friday, but that Spies did not undergo the tests that will provide the answer to his progress and availability.

Spies last played in June last year. The report said Ludeke also intimated that Bakkies Botha would not face the Stormers next weekend as he has not quite recovered from injury.

Ludeke’s approach not to gamble with injured players could mean that prop Rayno Gerber and World Cup wing Akona Ndungane will also not be selected for the Bulls’ Super 14 opener.

The Bulls side will be announced on Wednesday, when Ludeke is expected to announce his squad for the competition.
