Exactly what should we make of the Stormers and the Highlanders.

 

The Stormers have the talent to be in the top four but they are not. Instead they are in fifth place and have lost a match at home already.

We are waiting for the kick off. The match is underway.

 

3.00: The Stormers give away the first penalty for a high tackle by Andries Bekker so Israel Dagg takes the kick but misses.

 

6.00: The Highlanders are domination possession as they Highlanders keep the ball tight and moving through the phases. Eventually the Stormers get a penalty.

 

8.00: The Highlanders get blown up for a penalty  – not rolling away so Joe Pietersen takes the kick and nails it.

 

10.00: Alando Soakai gets a warning for taking a player out without the ball but no penalty.

 

11.00: The Stormers start bashing away at the Highlanders defence which holds strong until Clint Newland gives away a penalty.

 

12.00: Joe Pietersen takes the kick and nails it.

 

13.00: The Stormers are now in control of the ball. They try the kick and chase for Habana but the ball goes into touch.

 

14.00: The Stormers win the line out and they change sides and swing the ball out to Deon Fourie who powers over the tryline in the tackle and scores the try.

 

15.00: Joe Pietersen takes the conversion kick and nails it.

 

20.00: The Highlanders get a penalty so Michael Hobbs sets up a lineout in the Stormers 25. Highlanders win the lineout and swing the ball to the others Fetu’u Vainikolo is taken out high by Jaque Fourie 3m from the line. A penalty is awarded but there were strong grounds for a penalty try. Highlanders take the line out but they end up losing the ball.

 

22.00: Michael Hobbs takes a big shot at the posts with drop goal but misses. The Stormers take it quickly and Habana darts off but gets caught.

 

24.00: Deon Fourie has a darting run. He gets caught though. The Stormers are running nearly everything which is in contrast to the Waratahs earlier.

 

26.00:A couple of scrums go down so the ref has a chat with the front rows and the scrum resumes. As the Stormers progress Francois Louw gets blown up for a penalty.

 

29.00: Hobbs kicks for territory but the kick is charged down and D Fourie chases. He goes to ground and doesnt like it so he lets his opposite number know.

 

31.00: Dewaldt Duvenage has a darting run after a lineout. He gets tackled illegaly so the Stormers go back for a penalty.

 

32.00: Joe Pietersen takes the penalty kick and nails it. That’s four from four.

 

35.00: Highlanders start progressing forward but as they get into the Stormers half they give away a penalty for not releasing.

 

36.00: Sireli Naqelevuki has a darting run and passes to Joe Pietersen but he gets tackled and as they get over the line Deon Fourie knocks on.

 

38.00: Stormers win a lineout and get their maul rolling. As they get close to the line the Highlanders steal the ball and boot it out to safety.

 

39.00: Schalk Burger shows he has a fiery temper taking a swipe in front of the ref at Jimmy Cowan.

 

40.00: The siren sounds but there is time for a line out, Anton van Zyl steals the ball and it goes to ground. It’s half time.

 

The half time score was Stormers 16 Highlanders 0

 

The second half is underway.

 

42.00: The second half starts with a session of kicking which the Stormers win thanks to S Burger catching the ball with a foot in touch.

 

43.00: Brok Harris goes down injured so the game is held up while he gets some medical attention.

 

46.00: The Highlanders start to make some ground after a break by Jimmy Cowan. As they press forward though the Stormers turn it over.  

 

48.00: The Highlanders maintain their momentum. They get to within 5m and the Stormers give away a penalty. Cowan turns down the shot at posts and chooses to scrum.

 

49.00: Highlanders win the scrum and get to within 1 metre. Jimmy Cowan stretches for the post but knocks on. In the process he dislocates a little finger. His medical staff put it back in and he comes off. Sean Romans comes on.

 

50.00: The Highlanders give away a penalty (Clint Newland) and the best striking position so the Stormers kick for touch. Newland comes off.

 

53.00: The Stormers start to gain momentum as they run the ball down the wing. Adam Thomson gets over and puts in a covering tackle.

 

54.00: The Highlanders thwart an attack by the Stormers. They get the overlap but the passing is slow and that slows down their attack and allows the Stormers to get back. On the seventh phase the Stormers manage to boot the ball downfield but Hobbs gets back and he recycles which allows the Highlanders to reform.

 

56.00: Habana gets the ball from a Highlanders kick and runs a bit but fails to pass and is brought to ground. Highlanders then turn it over and Thomson thinks he is away but he is called back.

 

57.00: Fetu’u Vainikolo is replaced by James Paterson. Bronson Murray gives away a penalty in the scrum.

 

58.00: Stormers run the ball but get nowhere and they are then called back for an advantage a minute earlier.

 

60.00: The Stormers charge for the line with a maul and Burger pops out with the ball and scores the second try for the home side.

 

62.00: Joe Pietersen misses the conversion.

 

65.00: The Stormers go to the bench as Burger, Louw and Pietersen come off.

 

66.00: John Hardie comes off for the Highlanders as the Stormers set up a line out in the Highlanders half. They win the lineout and form the maul. They go through the phases and Naqelevuki but is held up. They go again and are held up again. We go back for a penalty by  Tim Boys who tackled a player without the ball. Habana comes off. Stormers go for the line out.

 

68.00: The Stormers set up the line out and Pieter Louw gets driven over and scores. The Highlanders claim obstruction.

 

69.00: Peter Grant misses the conversion.

 

70.00: The Stormers will now chase the bonus point. Gio Aplon finds space and has a darting run through the middle of the field. The Highlanders however catch him and counter attack. The Stormers keep them out.

 

73.00: The Highlanders up the pace and attack. They go through the phases and as they get close in the corner the Stormers deliberately interfere with the ball so a penalty is called. The Highlanders win the line out and swing it wide but a forward pass goes in.

 

76.00: Stormers on the hunt for the bonus point try but as they get a breakthrough they knock on. Bekker made the break.

 

78.00: From the half way line Michael Hobbs puts in a clearance kick which gets charged down and then chased by Bryan Habana who beats Israel Dagg to the ball and he regathers and scored the bonus point try. Habana must have come back on for blood.

 

79.00: Peter Grant nails the conversion.

 

The siren sounds. It’s full time.
