Stormers coach Kobus van der Merwe said on Wednesday that he is optimistic that star centre Jean de Villiers will be fit to face the Brumbies in their Super 14 match at Newlands on Friday.

“There is still a question mark behind Jean, but we are almost certain that he will be fit,” said Van der Merwe.

De Villiers, who missed the weekend’s 32-26 defeat to the Waratahs with a groin strain, was named in the Stormers team for Friday’s match. He will replace Gus Theron in the only change to the starting line-up this week. “We are backing the team. They performed really well against the Waratahs.

We beat ourselves. Twenty-two of their points came as a result of mistakes that we made. That just comes with experience,” said Van der Merwe.

“The Waratahs were finalists in last year’s Super 12. We had them for 70 minutes and just lost it in the last ten.” De Villiers was under no illusions about the calibre of opponents the Stormers will once again face on Friday. “The Brumbies have been excellent for the last five years.

They don’t have weaknesses. It’s always difficult to play against them, especially (scrumhalf) George Gregan and (flyhalf) Stephen Larkham. (Centres) Matt Giteau and Stirling Mortlock are also looking good. Hopefully we can put pressure on them,” he said.
