Stormers make changes in coaching

The Stormers have made a signifucant change in their coaching structure after the Director of Rugby, Nick Mallett, proposed the restructuring of the Coaching Department so as to further develop the skills and potential of the young players.

The proposal has been accepted by the Executive Committee, WPRFU.

In a press statement the Western Province Rugby Football Union said, It is a growing trend that professional rugby players are entering the paid ranks and playing at a higher level at a much younger age than before. Their development is, therefore, crucial. To meet this need, Gary Gold was approached to see if he would be willing to relinquish his position as Assistant Coach Vodacom Stormers and Vodacom Western Province and take up the position of Head Coach Vodacom WP (Vodacom Cup) and Vodacom WP Under 21. The choice was entirely his as a contract is in place as Assistant Coach until end 2007.

However, his coaching expertise at a high level and his ability to bring out the best in our young players were crucial in meeting the requirements. If we analyse the number of Under 21 players playing in the Vodacom Cup competition and the number of players who in 2006 graduated from the Vodacom Cup competition to the Absa Currie Cup competition, then we are indeed fortunate to have a coach of Gary’s calibre.

It must be strongly pointed out that this is not a step down for Gary. Gary was given the option and he certainly could have remained in the position he occupied this past 2006 season. However, he has bought in totally to the bigger picture where the preparation of the young players is of paramount importance and has gladly and excitedly accepted his new role. Gary’s contract has been extended until the end of 2009. Obviously, this does not preclude Gary’s expertise being utilised when required for Vodacom Super 14 and ABSA Currie Cup.

WP Rugby is equally excited and also thankful for Gary’s unselfish attitude. We believe the development of our young players will be in good hands as we prepare for the future.
