Stormers beat Bulls in Cape Town

The Stormers have played the Bulls 31 times in Super Rugby since 1996, the Stormers have won 18 matches, drawn one and lost 12 times.

The Stormers 18 wins out of 31 matches gives them a record of winning 58% of their games against the Bulls regardless of venue.

  • The Bulls won their most recent meeting with the Stormers, in the opening round of this season, however, they’ve not won consecutive games against the Cape Town side since winning five on the bounce between 2005 and 2009.
  • The Stormers have won their last seven home games against the Bulls, their recent such defeat coming back in June 2011 (16-19).
  • The Bulls have won their last two away games, against the Lions and the Sharks, as many as they’d won in their previous 16 road games (W2, L14).
  • Pote Human’s side has conceded just five first-half tries in Super Rugby this year, fewer than any other team.
  • The Stormers have scored the fewest in the opening 40 minutes of matches (6), this campaign.
  • Bulls’ hooker Corniel Els has found a teammate with all 27 of his lineout throws in 2019; no other hooker has attempted more than seven throws without missing at least one.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kickoff.

In the meantime why not have a look at the match preview.

Trevor Nyakane, playing in his 100th Super Rugby, leads the Bulls out on to the field. He is followed by Burger Odendaal, who is playing in his 50th Super Rugby match.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway on a sunny Freedom Day for this North versus South, South African derby at Newlands, Cape Town.

3.00: Both sides are going to the boot in the early exchanges. Odendaal takes a quick throw to Warrick Gelant, who clears down the field. the ball is kept in play and the Stormers counter-attack.

4.00: Rudolph Snyman cannot hold onto Odendaal’s pop-pass inside the red zone. The Bulls’ attack started after Lizo Gqoboka broke free in midfield and raced away to the Stormers’ 22 before being brought down. However, poor hands kill the attack.

6.00: Gqoboka collapses the scrum, and is penalised. Jean-Luc du Plessis clears.

7.00: Cobus Wiese combines with Dillyn Leyds after Damian Willemse’s nifty offload on the sideline. Leyds cannot gather the lock’s pass, but he kicks forward. He is, however, beaten to the ball by Gelant.

9.00: Leyds is down after a high tackle from Gelant. Du Plessis kicks to the opposition’s 22.

10.00: NO TRY! Leyds puts boot to ball on the right-hand sideline. Jade Stighling beats Johannes Engelbrecht to the bouncing ball, but the winger loses the ball backwards and Herschel Jantjies, following behind, dots down. However, referee Glen Jackson thinks the scrumhalf has knocked on, and he goes upstairs to the TMO. The replays show that Jantjies knocks forward before scoring. 0-0

11.00: Scrum to the visitors on their line.

13.00: TRY! Sergeal Petersen scores in the corner after a well-worked move. Siya Kolisi took a long, floated pass and combined with Pieter-Steph du Toit to send the wing away. 5-0

15.00: CONVERSION! Du Plessis makes no mistake from the touchline. 7-0

17.00: The Stormers are dominating at Newlands. They are quicker to the breakdown, causing havoc in the wide channels where Leyds and Petersen are finding joy.

18.00: The Bulls have already missed 13 tackles in the opening quarter.

20.00: The Stormers have had all the territory (75%) and possession (73%).

21.00: Penalty to the Bulls at the ruck. Pollard calls for the tee.

22.00: PENALTY! Pollard, the tournament’s highest point-scorer and kicking at 85%, puts the Bulls on the board. 7-3

24.00: Steven Kitshoff wins the turnover and the Stormers counter. However, the ball is lost by Du Toit before the Bulls knock on. It’s all a bit frenetic and sloppy, to be fair.

25.00: Leyds and Stighling clash heads; both leave the field for an HIA. Seabelo Senatla and Divan Rossouw replace the wingers.

26.00: Glen Jackson, after spotting Jantjies’ slight knock on, has missed three since. Wiese clearly lost the ball forward in front of the ref, but he did not blow the whistle. Instead, the Stormers keep attacking, ending with an attacking lineout inside the Nulls’ 22.

28.00: TRY! Gelant breaks free of a tackle tries to offload but Ivan van Zyl loses the ball. The Stormers counter from inside their 22 through Willemse. The fullback swivels the defenders, sending him for an onion bagel before racing away down the sideline. He draws the defender and pops to Senatla, who swerves past Pollard and is in for his 6th Super rugby try in his 22nd match. 12-3

29.00: CONVERSION! Du Plessis adds the two. 14-3

32.00: Senatla is caught offsides; Pollard kicks the penalty to the Stormers’ 22.

35.00: Johnny Kotze goes close, but his inside pass is intercepted by Petersen. The 24-year-old breaks and tries an inside pass of his own, but it is lost forward in contact.

36.00: Scrum to the visitors inside their host’s 22.

37.00: John Schickerling is caught offsides. Pollard has had enough of this helter-skelter, and calls for the tee, deciding that three is better than none, at this stage.

38.00: PENALTY! Pollard doubles his sides score. 14-6

39.00: The Bulls win another penalty after the restart. No surprise as Pollard calls for his kicking tee.

40.00: PENALTY! He makes no mistake from near the halfway line. 14-9

The halftime score was Stormers 14 Bulls 9

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in Cape Town.

43.00: TRY!  That’s the start Pote human will have wanted from his men. The Bulls go 15 phases, from the restart, and level when Van Zyl dots down against the post. Gqoboka and Kriel both went close before the scrumhalf burrowed through from the base of the ruck. 14-all

44.00: CONVERSION! Pollard adds the extras. 14-16

47.00: The Bulls have all the momentum after the break.

48.00: BIG SCRUM! The visitors win a scrum-penalty. Gqoboka broke Frans Malherbe in the set-piece; Pollard clears.

50.00: Good work by the Stormers as they win a penalty at the breakdown.

53.00: The players are dropping like flies. More stoppages due to the medics checking the injured players.

55.00: The Stormers win a penalty and will take a shot at goal.

57.00: PENALTY! Joshua Stander lands the goal to put his side back in front. 17-16

59.00: TRY! Manie Libbok’s kick does not find touch. Leyds runs an angled run through five defenders before offloading to Jantjies in support. The scrumhalf, who is hot right now, gathered the pass in mid-air to score his third try of the season. 22-16

60.00: CONVERSION! Stander extends the lead. 24-16

63.00: Players are hobbling, bleeding and dropping like flies. Kriel is down with a leg injury, now.

65.00: The Stormers forwards collapse the maul; Pollard dinks the kick into touch, five metres out.

66.00: Another maul is collapsed by the home team. Mr Jackson warned the Stormers that the next infringement will result in a yellow card. Pollard opts for another lineout.

67.00: That’s a massive moment in the game as the Bulls conceded a silly penalty at the base of their own ruck. Stander bangs the ball down the field and releases the pressure.

70.00: The Bulls have butchered an excellent two-on-one opportunity, instead, they cannot finish a dazzling attack.

72.00: They have the ball again, and are back inside the Stormers’ 22, however, Embrose Papier knocks on – again – at the base of the ruck. This is poor.

76.00: Human’s men have run out of gas in the last quarter of the game, while the Stormers, although tiring, have been immense on defence.

78.00: some reset scrums are running down the clock on this bruising derby.

80.00: Johan Grobbelaar knocks on at the halfway line; that’s the ball-game.

81.00: The Bulls take a shot at goal for the losing bonus-point, but the kick sails wide.

82.00: TRY! Instead of kicking the ball out, Senatla tries to run the ball from his line. Several phases later, Libbok scores to give his side a losing bonus-point.

83.00: CONVERSION! Pollard adds the inconsequential two points.
