Stormers beat Jaguares at Newlands

The Stormers and Jaguares have played each other just four times in Super Rugby since 2016 when the Jaguares joined the tournament.

The Stormers have won three matches and lost one out of the four Super Rugby matches played, giving the Cape Town team a record of winning 75% of their matches against the South Americans.

3.00: Matias Moroni goes and throws a pass into touch as well. It’s a sloppy start at Newlands.

5.00: The Jaguares have a penalty advantage for a high tackle; however, the South Americans don’t need it. They go wide, Moroni draws to defenders after Marais shoots the line, and he puts Bautista Delguy away in the corner. 0-5

6.00: MISS! Joaquin Diaz Bonilla pushes his kick wide of the posts. 0-5

8.00: The Stormers turn the ball over again, this time inside the opposition’s 22, and they waste an early opportunity to strike back.

9.00: The home team win an early lineout and build a solid looking maul. They go a couple of phases with the big ball carriers but Marais decides to change direction, aiming for the vacant right wing, but his kick is too long. 22 drop-out for the visitors.

10.00: John Schickerling gets over the advantage line before the Stormers go wide. They have two offsides’ advantages. Dillyn Leyds combined with Siya Kolisi with a no-look back-flip pass to earn some extra yards in the wide channels.

12.00: Marais calls for the kicking tee.

13.00: PENALTY! Marais’s kick shades the upright and is good. 3-5

14.00: Jean-Luc du Plessis has had an iffy start to this game; passing into touch and now he knocks on giving the Jaguares a centre field scrum in Stormers’ territory.

15.00: Damian de Allende wins a turnover and clears the danger with a superb kick to the halfway line. The visitors lose the ball forward after winning their lineout. Eben Etzebeth contested the ball and helped create the error.

17.00: The scrum collapses but referee Jaco Peyper awards another put-in to the home team. Frans Malherbe and Mayco Vivas being watched by the ref.

18.00: TRY! Dan du Plessis collects a dropped ball after Jean-Luc du Plessis’s chip-kick was challenged by De Allende causing the mistake, and he’s in for the home team’s first try of the evening. 8-5

20.00: CONVERSION! Marais adds the extras. 10-5

22.00: Leyds makes a break, bursting into the Jaguares’ 22, but he places the ball back expecting support. Joaquin Tuculet makes the tackle and wins the turnover sparking a breathtaking counter-attack from deep.

24.00: Moroni puts boot to ball but the opportunity goes begging. The visitors are looking dangerous in broken play.

25.00: Good defending by the home pack, they sack the maul before it can get going. The Jaguares regroup and are going through the phases. The attacking move ends with a knock on, but Mr Peyper was playing advantage. It was Kolisi who was pinged for a high tackle on Tomas Cubelli.

26.00: PENALTY! Diaz Bonilla makes no mistake from in front. 10-8

28.00: Tuculet cleans up the mess at the back, pinning Robbie Fleck’s team inside their 22. Oh dear, Siyabonga Ntubeni overthrows his jumpers, but the Jaguares lose the ball forward. Scrum to the hosts.

29.00: BIG SCRUM by the Stormers’ front row. They win a scrum-penalty when they needed it most.

30.00: Rasta Rasivhenge, the assistant touch judge sees that Tuculet’s touch-finder was taken back by Cubelli and calls the lineout back to the tourist’s 22.

33.00: Stormers are dominating territory but not possession; they keep turning the ball over inside the South American’s 22. Their kicking has been average, too.

34.00: Damian Willemse comes on at flyhalf for Jean-Luc du Plessis, who leaves for an HIA. Moroni penalised giving Marais a chance to extend his side’s lead.

35.00: PENALTY! It’s good from the utility back. 13-8

36.00: Willemse starts with a good clearance kick to relieve some pressure. Pieter-Steph du Toit hits Pablo Matera at the gain line; it looked like a car crash but both get-up and continue.

37.00: Sebastian Cancelliere, on for Delguy, cleans up after he loses the ball backwards and under pressure.

39.00: The Jaguares are meeting the Stormers’ physicality but it’s their hands; their execution that is letting them down. A couple of scrum resets before half time.

40.00: Willemse throws a long floated pass to Leyds on the wing, but it drifts forwards; that’s the third one like that thrown today.

42.00: The Stormers win a late penalty for holding at the ruck. Marais is calling for the tee to have a last gasp shot at goal before the interval. He’s three from three, tonight and he has a big boot.

43.00: PENALTY! The 29-year-old makes no mistake. that must have been 54 metres and the ball sailed over the crossbar. 16-8

42.00: There were 12 handling errors in the first 40 minutes, seven for the visitors, which they’ll need to address.

43.00: Guido Petti uses his speed after combining in midfield with a wrap-around. He is brought down near the goal line, the ball is recycled but lost forward at the next phase.

46.00: The Jaguares are penalised for not releasing. Some good work by the hosts at the breakdown allows Marais to kick deep into the visitor’s half.

47.00: TRY! A superb rolling maul from the Stormers’ forward pack. They mauled patiently before peeling right and slowly marching towards the goal line. Kolisi breaks from the maul and crashes through three tackles to score. 21-8

49.00: CONVERSION! Marais adds the extras. 23-8

51.00: Etzebeth will not return after failing an HIA. A mistake by Herschel Jantjies allows the Jaguares an attacking lineout on the host’s 22.

52.00: NO TRY! Santiago Medrano drops the ball forward over the try line. The Stormers have got a lucky break because that was too easy.

54.00: A couple of resets scrums; Mr Peyper is talking to the two hookers about packing down and their positioning at the engagement. Corne Fourie is pinged for collapsing.

55.00: The Jaguares kick to the corner, but some superb defensive work sees the Stormers hold the tourists up. It’s still Jaguares’ ball.

57.00: MASSIVE SCRUM by the Stormers! They win the penalty; Fourie redeems himself and Fleck’s team can clear.

58.00: Jean-Luc du Plessis kicks a wonderful kick to the corner. It was poor in midfield by the Jaguares; they lost another ball in contact after Marais failed to find touch with the penalty.

60.00: TRY! Jantjies darts around a broken ruck and scores. He ghosted through Petti and Mayco Vivas to put his side in a commanding position. 28-8

61.00: CONVERSION! Jean-Luc du Plessis adds another two. 30-8

65.00: It’s a bit scrappy, now. Gonzalo Quesada’s substitutions are not having the desired effect, in fact, the South Americans are looking tired, despite many being rested last weekend. He will be disappointed with his team.

67.00: A scuffle breaks out after a high tackle by Javier Ortega Desio on Justin Phillips. It’s pretty standard at this stage of the game, especially when one team is dominating.

68.00: The forward pack opts for a scrum, which of course, is reset.

69.00: The Stormers shunt the Jaguares backwards, but they don’t get awarded a penalty, instead, Desio picks up the ball and breaks.

70.00: The attack breaks down with another handling error, gifting possession away.

71.00: Penalty to the hosts. They are killing the opposition’s pack.

73.00: Fleck’s men are camped inside the visitor’s 22. Willemse made a break but lost the ball in the tackle as he tried to release and get up to continue.

74.00: The scrums are a mess; it’s Wilco Louw who is pinged for not binding. What can the tourists conjure?

76.00: It’s scrappy at the death. The Jaguares keep losing possession and the Stormers keep pinning them back in their half with some excellent kicking by Leyds, Du Plessis and Willemse.

78.00: TRY! Phillips crashes over from close range. Bongi Mbonambi broke from the rolling maul, was stopped short of the line, but the scrumhalf gathered and shot over four the bonus-point score. 35-8

79.00: MISS! The kick is no good. 35-8

81.00: Juan Manuel Leguizamon knocks on after a turnover, and that’s the ball-game.
