on

The Stormers have played the Jaguares six times in Super Rugby since 2016; they have won four matches and lost twice against the Argentinians.

The Stormers’ four wins out of six matches give them a record of winning 67% of their matches against the Jaguares regardless of venue.

  • Each of the last five Super Rugby games between the Stormers and Jaguares has been won by the home team on the day, with the Argentinian squad picking up two wins in the last three iterations.
  • John Dobson’s side has kept their opponent scoreless in each of their last two Super Rugby games at home, as many times as they had done so in their nine seasons prior.
  • The Jaguares have won their last five Super Rugby games on the bounce against South African opposition, as many, as they had won in their 18 games prior (L13).
  • The Jaguares have scored five tries from mauls so far this Super Rugby campaign, more than any other team in the competition and four more than the Stormers.
  • Guido Petti Pagadizaval (Jaguares) has made the most tackles (29) of any player not to miss an attempt this season; he’s also won (22) and stolen (4) more lineouts than any other player.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

In the meantime, why not have a look at the match preview.

Sergeal Petersen plays his 50th Super Rugby match today, but not all for the Stormers as he represented the Kings and Cheetahs in the competition earlier in his career.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway at a wet and sodden Newlands, Cape Town.

3.00: The Jaguares attack from a lineout on the home team’s 22, but the ball is lost forward, giving the hosts a reprieve.

4.00: Scrum to the hosts inside their 22. MASSIVE scrum by Dobson’s pack, who bulldoze their opponents.

5.00: Damian Willemse boots the Stormers to halfway.

7.00: Superb play by the home team. They went through the phases, but some good defending by the Argentinians keeps them out. Willemse decides to go to the boot, pinning the visitors inside their 22.

8.00: The Jaguares lose their throw, but after hammering away at the orange wall, the ball is lost forward after contact. Scrum to the Jaguares.

9.00: STAT ATTACK! Both teams have not scored a try this season when going past seven phases.

10.00: The Stormers’ scrum goes forward again, but Rodrigo Bruni picks up at the back and charges forward. Steven Kitshoff is caught offside. Domingo Miotti clears the danger.

11.00: Tomas Cubelli’s kick is out on the full, bringing back play to the Jaguares’ half. The entire Jaguares backline is offsides at the lineout. Willemse boots the ball deep into the opposition’s 22.

12.00: Matias Alemanno goes off his feet at the ruck. Willemse opts for a shot at goal.

13.00: PENALTY! Willemse opens the scoring from in front. 3-0

15.00: Los Jaguares are marching into Stormers territory.

16.00: YELLOW CARD! Frans Malherbe is sin-binned for a no-arms tackle, deemed to be dangerous from referee Rasta Rasivhenge and TMO Willie Vos. Bizarre call! 3-0

18.00: More good defending from the hosts, they keep the Jaguares out while driving them back. Scrum to the Stormers near their 10m.

19.00: Another HUGE SCRUM by the Stormers. Jamie Roberts, on the blindside flank, helps Wilco Louw, on for Malherbe, to drive Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro back and win the penalty.

22.00: Miotti pins the home team back inside their 22, but Willemse boots the ball back to his 10m. The weather conditions dictate the tactics, which will be to play in the opposition’s half.

23.00: Pieter-Steph du Toit wins position by holding up the driving maul.

25.00: It’s a stop-start affair in Cape Town. Gonzalo Quesada’s side is struggling with their set-pieces and cannot get their driving maul going. Their penalty count is also mounting.

26.00: A promising 10-phase attack stall when the Stormers throw a wayward pass that is intercepted. A kicking duel ensues and Miotti drops the high, wet ball gifting the Stormers an attacking scrum inside the 22. Malherbe is back on the field, too.

29.00: Solid defending by Los Jaguares. The Stormers went 10+ phases again, but they ran out of ideas before Ruahn Nel was held-up, conceding possession and a good scoring opportunity.

32.00: Gonzalo Quesada’s tactics seem to play in the opposition’s half and attack with their powerful forward-pack inside their opponent’s 22; however, they cannot hold onto the ball or stop giving away penalties in the tight phases.

33.00: STAT ATTACK! The Stormers have shutout both the Hurricanes and the Bulls, this season.

34.00: Willemse’s pass is wild, killing another good attack by Dobson’s men. Peterson, Roberts and Seabelo Senatla all carried the ball forward before the handling error. Scrum to the visitors inside their 22.

36.00: Miotti’s brilliant spiral kick takes play to the Stormers’ 10m.

37.00: Superb counter-attack by the Stormers. Peterson, Willemse and Dillyn Leyds all combined before Peterson’s kick was out by the Jaguares, inside their 22. Attacking lineout to the hosts.

39.00: Excellent defending by Los Jaguares’ pack, keeping the Stormers out, holding up the maul – again – and getting the scrum. Reset.

41.00: Miotti clears to touch before the hooter sounds, but it’s halftime.

The halftime score was Stormers 3 Jaguares 0

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in South Africa.

43.00: The Stormers defence has been immense, keeping a clean sheet in every half of three games so far, but they are struggling to finish today.

44.00: Jaco Coetzee is pinged for deliberately knocking down the ball. Miotti kicks to the Stormers half.

45.00: TRY! Herschel Jantjies makes miracles happen! The scrumhalf picks up Juan Cruz Mallia’s loose pass, inside his 22, and races 80 metres to score under the posts. This player is the future! 8-0

47.00: CONVERSION! Willemse adds the extras. 10-0

48.00: Roberts makes a wonderful last-ditch try-saving tackle on Sebastian Cancelliere near the Stormers try-line. The visitors have the scrum, though.

50.00: Tomas Lezana powers towards the line, but two tacklers knock the ball out. The Stormers boot the ball away, but the opposition comes straight back and almost score. However, the ball is forced out of the hands of Bautista Delguy after another double-tackle.

52.00: The teams are emptying their benches.

53.00: TRY! Nel carries two defenders over the try-line to increase the lead after some good work by the forwards, Roberts and Coetzee, who both carried towards the line. 15-0

54.00: CONVERSION! Willemse, kicking into the north-easterly wind, slots the wide conversion. 17-0

57.00: The Stormers are well-suited to wet weather and dry weather rugby, while their opponents struggle in the rain. It’s showing again.

60.00: Dobson’s side is in complete control at Newlands.

62.00: The Stormers are having to do some defending for long periods.

64.00: Coetzee makes a try-saving intervention on last weekend’s hat-trick hero Julian Montoya. It’s inconclusive that the hooker grounded the ball over the line, so the Jaguares go back for the scrum.

65.00: The Stormers scrum disintegrates, giving away another scrum-penalty; Montoya opts for another scrum. The Stormers replace their front row.

66.00: TRY! Bruni, who has been immense, scores after another reset. The No 8 picked up the rolling ball and dived over on the blindside to get his team on the board. 17-5

67.00: CONVERSION! Miotti slots the wide kick. 17-7, game on!

68.00: NO TRY! Sensational from the Jaguares; they storm from their 22 to go 80 metres and score after a breath-taking counter-attack. But the TMO review shows that Bruni was accidentally offside from Gonzalo Bertranou’s dropped ball. 17-7

69.00: Willemse kicks to the corner as the Stormers look to run down the clock as well as go for five instead of three.

71.00; It’s all the Stormers now, the chalked off try has killed the momentum of the tourists.

74.00: The Stormers run the ball from their 22, but the play is called back for a knock-on.

76.00: Jaguares scrum outside their 22 before Gonzalo Bertranou is tackled into touch.

79.00: Willemse goes close, but he gets penalised for not releasing and playing the ball on the ground.

83.00: The Jaguares attack for more nearly three minutes after the hooter sounded, but they botch another attack, and the Stormers stay top of the South African Conference.
