The Stormers kick off the 2018 Super Rugby season at home in Cape Town against Argentina’s Jaguares at Newlands.
The Stormers have played the Jaguares twice before in Super Rugby – at home and away – but have never lost to the South American side.
It is 27 degrees in Cape Town which has been gripped by a crippling drought. We are expecting lots of tries from these two teams.
Match detail
We are waiting for the kick-off.
Siya Kolisi leads the Stormers out on to the Newlands pitch.
.00: PEEEEP! We are underway in the 2018 season.
.00: Ramone Samuels, a late change for Mbongi Mbonambi, throws skew from the lineout, gifting the visitors the scrum.
.00: The Jaguares win a penalty inside the Stormers’ 22.
.00: PENALTY Nicolás Sánchez! 0-3 to the Argentines.
.00: The handling from the Jaguares has been slick. They also led last year’s competition in offloads and are doing more of the same in the opening exchanges.
.00: The visitors go 10 phases before being pinged at the breakdown. The Stormers go quickly, but nothing comes from Damian Willemse’s long kick.
.00: Tomás Lavanini is penalised for not releasing and the home side kicks the resulting penalty into touch.
.00: The Stormers lose the ball forwards, but it is another penalty, this time for offsides. The Stormers kick to the five-metre line.
.00: It’s another poorly executed lineout. The late change at hooker has influenced the lineout set-piece in a negative way for the Stormers.
.00: Yet another lineout mistake by Samuels, this time he overthrows his jumper. He has been poor.
.00: Seabelo Senatla shows his sevens skills with a jinking run and chip and chase. Damian de Allende tackles a defender, but the attack is halted.
.00: Gonzalo Bertranou stops Cobus Wiese from dotting down. The TMO is called for and confirms that the flanker lost the ball forward while trying to ground. Scrum to the Jaguares.
.00: TRY Damian de Allende! The Springbok centre spots a gap, steps of his right foot and charges through four defenders before scoring under the posts. 5-3
.00: CONVERSION Willemse!
.00: The Jaguares get a penalty near halfway and will take a shot. Emiliano Boffelli steps up.
.00: PENALTY Boffelli, 7-6
.00: Dewaldt Duvenage with a huge tackle around the fringes and the Stormers have a scrum.
.00: Nothing comes from Senatla’s break and the visitors win the penalty. They clear their lines with a big kick.
.00: Another fantastic break by Senatla, who runs from his 10 into the opposition’s 22 before passing to Duvenage. However, the move breaks down after a good tackle by Joaquin Tuculet.
.00: YELLOW CARD Joaquin Tuculet! The fullback is sent to the bin for a professional foul after his tackle.
.00: PENALTY Willemse! 10-6
.00: Sánchez is down. The Jaguares will need to conserve energy, especially in this heat. They continue to be penalised and have players sent to the bin. Nothing has changed from their previous two seasons.
.00: TRY Siya Kolisi! The captain takes the ball and runs over Bautista Ezcurra and races away to score. 15-6
.00: MISS! Oh dear! Willemse’s conversion attempt is charged down. 15-6
.00: The Jaguares are playing fast and loose, which is costing them possession. They cannot hang on to the ball, gifting the Stormers easy possession. There does not seem to be any structure to their game.
.00: Tuculet is back from his stint on the naughty step. His time off the field cost the South Americans eight points.
.00: The scrum, on the Jaguares’ 22, is reset. The problem is on the Stormers’ loosehead and Jaguares’ tighthead side of the set-piece. Third reset.
.00: Half the Stormers’ defenders are caught offsides. Sánchez kicks deep and his side will have the lineout, six metres from the try-line.
.00: Nahuel Tétaz Chaparro charges towards the whitewash, but he has the ball stripped by John Schickerling. The ball is recycled and kicked into touch.
.00: Half-time!
The half-time score was Stormers 15 Jaguares 6
.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway at Newlands.
.00: TRY Raymond Rhule! Wow! What a start. The Stormers send the ball wide, from deep inside their 22. Nizaam Carr offloads to Rhule, who breaks the line, steps a defender, hands off another and races away to score. 20-6
.00: CONVERSION Willemse, 22-6
.00: The Jaguares are putting some phases together.
.00: TRY Boffelli! The winger breaks Dillyn Leyds’ weak tackle, hands off De Allende and cruises in for the try. 22-11
.00: CONVERSION Sánchez, 22-13
.00: The Stormers are piling the pressure. They go several phases and win a penalty after the Jaguares collapse the driving maul.
.00: Great work by Pablo Matera, who steals the ball. Sánchez clears his lines. That was superb defending by the South Americans.
.00: Ramiro Moyano saves the day, beating Kolisi and Rhule onto De Allende’s little dink. It’s a 22 drop out. The Stormers win the ball and go again.
.00: It is all Stormers. The penalties for offsides and going off feet are killing the Jaguares. Their discipline is shocking; can it ever be sorted out. Willemse calls for the tee.
.00: PENALTY Willemse! 25-13
.00: The Stormers are under the pump and cannot get out of their 22. Eventually, Duvenage clears, but it is a short clearance.
.00: Jaco Peyper calls over Kolisi to warn him about the multiple infringements near the goal-line. Matera opts to kick to touch, five metres out from the Stormers’ try-line.
.00: The Jaguares drive forward, but the home team holds strong.
.00: After several phases, the ball is lost forward by the Argentines. Wonderful defence by the Stormers, who clear. However, the Jaguares run the ball back and are near the try-line.
.00: YELLOW CARD Ramone Samuels! It was coming and Peyper had warned Kolisi.
.00: There is some confusion over which loose forward has to leave the field. Dean Muir replaces Samuels, but the Stormers did not know who to substitute. Farcical at this level. Matera calls for the scrum, which has been reset three times.
.00: PENALTY TRY! A huge scrum by the South Americans results in a penalty try! Peyper had no other option. Game on! 25-20
.00: It’s all Jaguares, who have found their mojo. Their handling and offloading have been superb in the second half. They win a penalty, five metres out after the Stormers are pinged for offsides. It was Rhule, this time.
.00: The home team is reeling. They have four minutes before they have their full quota back on the field. Matera calls for another scrum, in a similar position to the last one that resulted in the penalty try.
.00: Massive scrum, but the Stormers hold out. However, they are penalised, yet again. The referee warns the Stormers’ front row that he will go to his pocket the next time the scrum collapses.
.00: MASSIVE SCRUM! Jacobus Janse van Rensburg pops his man and the Stormers win the penalty for illegal scrumming. Willemse clears. Huge moment in the match.
.00: Big moment in the match as the TMO and referee confer for foul play. Justin Phillips and Tuculet had a scrap, but there was nothing in it. however, the Stormers get the penalty for a late push by the fullback.
.00: Leyds makes a break, puts in a grubber, but Willemse is pushed off the ball. The Stormers win the penalty and opt for a game-winning shot at goal.
.00: PENALTY Willemse! Game over! 28-20
FULL-TIME.
