Stormers beat Lions in Cape Town

on

This will be the first meeting between the Stormers and Lions in Super Rugby Unlocked.

The Lions’ three-point loss to the Sharks (19-16) in Round 1 was the closest margin in a game on the opening weekend of Super Rugby Unlocked.

The Lions did not score a single point in the opening quarter of their Round 1 loss against the Sharks; they were one of two sides in Super Rugby Unlocked not to trouble the scoreboard in this period (also Bulls).

Morne van den Berg (Lions) won two turnovers in Round 1 of Super Rugby Unlocked; he was one of two backs to win more than one turnover in the round (Carl Els – 2).

EW Viljoen (Lions) made a joint-round high 13 carries on the opening weekend of Super Rugby Unlocked; in fact, the Lions had the most players make 10+ carries of any side in Round 1 (x3 – Viljoen, Willem Alberts –10 and Vincent Tshituka – 10).

The Stormers started the tournament with an opening-week bye.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway at Newlands in Cape Town.

3.00: Some early pressure by the home team, but a knock-on by Augustus, kills the attack.

6.00: The game is stop-start. The Lions win a penalty, and continuing with their new-found conservatism, they will take a shot at goal instead of kicking to the corner. No Malcolm Marx, no party.

8.00: PENALTY! Elton Jantjies opens the scoring in Cape town. 0-3

9.00: The Stormers kick deep from the restart and win a penalty at the breakdown. Damian Willemse calls for the tee.

9.00: PENALTY! Willemse levels from in front. 3-3

11.00: TRY! Rabz Maxwane finishes off a sublime Lions’ attack. Quick hands from Jantjies to Maxwane, who sends Jaco Kriel flying down the left-wing. The flanker drew the cover defender before plying an inside pass to the supporting Jantjies. The flyhalf drew his man and sent Maxwane in for the score. 3-8

12.00: CONVERSION! Jantjies converts. 3-10

13.00: Burger Odendaal gives away a penalty, Willemse will take a shot.

14.00: MISS! Willemse cannot find his range from distance. 3-10

17.00: The Stormers have looked to go wide at every opportunity. The visitors are containing the hosts, who won another penalty. This time, they opt for an attacking lineout inside the Joburg men’s 22.

18.00: The home team botches a blindside attack from the lineout. Scrum to the Lions, deep in their 22.

21.00: John Dobson’s men come again, they go several phases before losing possession, gifting the Lions an easy out.

24.00: Rikus Pretorius knocks-on a high ball; it is the 5th handling error by the Stormers, while in contrast, the Lions have only made one handling mistake.

26.00: The scrum is reset after both front rows collapse.

28.00: The Lions conceded their third penalty at the breakdown for going off their feet and sealing off the ruck.

29.00: Ivan van Rooyen’s forwards do well to rip the ball away from the Stormers, and clear their lines.

31.00: NO TRY! Some more brilliant handling by the Lions. Jaco Kriel’s pass to Burger Odendaal is deemed forward by the TMO, and Odendaal’s try is chalked off. 3-10

34.00: The Lions slow the tempo, and clear their lines. Stormers need some points before halftime because the visitors look dangerous in the wide channels, and will score more tries.

35.00: PENALTY! Willemse obliges with his second penalty. 6-10

37.00: Steven Kitshoff charges down Odendaal’s kick but cannot gather; he could have done a WP Nel.

40.00: Carlu Sadie wins the penalty-turnover after Bongi Mbonambi is isolated.

41.00: Lions with the throw. It’s a sloppy lineout by the visitors, who recover the ball, and instead of booting the ball out, kicks an up-and-under. The home team claims possession, but nothing comes from the counter-attack.

The halftime score is Stormers 6 Lions 10

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in Cape Town.
