Stormers beat Reds in Cape Town

on

The Stormers beat the Blues at home in Cape Town last week and this week they will be aiming to follow this up by beating the Reds.

The Stormers have played the Reds 18 times in Super rugby and they have won 11 matches and lost six.

  • The Stormers have won nine of their last 12 games against the Reds; however, the spoils are split at three wins apiece in their last six meetings.
  • Each of the Stormers five games so far this campaign have been won by the home team on the day, with the Stormers earning wins against the Jaguares and Blues so far this season.
  • The Reds have won just one of their last 11 games in South African, a one-point win over the Cheetahs in Round 10, 2015.
  • The Reds have gained just 346m per game this season, the fewest of any team in the competition.
  • The Stormers’ Damian Willemse and Reds’ James Tuttle have each kicked six penalty goals this season, the equal most of any players; neither has missed.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway at Newlands, Cape Town. Let’s hope this South Africa-Australia clash is as enthralling as the cricket, next door.

3.00: PENALTY! Damian Willemse gets the Stormers on the board. 3-0

5.00: Taniela Tupou tackles Cobus Wiese high and into touch but is not pinged.

7.00: The Reds’ pack is huge, but the Stormers are beating them in the collisions. Willemse is shoved in the back without the ball. Dewaldt Duvenage takes it quickly and the Stormers attack.

10.00: There are some high hits coming from the visitors, but the referee says it is okay.

11.00: The replay is jeered by the crowd because it looked a card offence.

13.00: Siya Kolisi takes a hospital pass from Willemse and is smoked by Adam Korczyk, losing the ball forward. Scrum to the Reds inside their half.

14.00: The game is very cagey; both teams struggling to get a foothold.

15.00: TRY! Dewaldt Duvenage finishes in the corner after some great work by Raymond Rhule, who beats two men, creating an overlap and giving the ball to EW Viljoen. The centre beats a tackler before sending the scrumhalf away. 8-0

16.00: MISS! Willemse pushes his kick wide. 8-0

19.00: a brilliant kick by Willemse gives his team excellent field position on the Reds’ 5-metre.

21.00: It’s all Stormers; Viljoen is tackled into touch and loses the ball after pressure from Filipo Daugunu.

22.00: So far, this game has not lived up to the cricket, but it’s early doors, yet.

23.00: Ramone Samuels knocks on trying to pop a pass to Nizaam Carr. The Reds have the scrum inside their 22. Taniela Tupou is pinged for an early engagement. Kolisi calls for another scrum.

26.00: TRY! Wilco Louw powers over after some patient build-up by the home side. Willemse went close, dancing through tacklers before the prop crossed the whitewash.

27.00: CONVERSION! Willemse adds the extras. 15-0

28.00: Kolisi knocks on and the Reds get a scrum inside the home side’s 22. Taniela Tupou is penalised, again, for illegal scrumming. Stormers clear.

31.00: Marius van der Westhuizen checks for another dangerous tackle, but the TMO deems the hit, legal. That is the third time we have gone upstairs for a dangerous hit by a Reds’ player. The time we didn’t, Tupou might have been sent off.

32.00: PENALTY! Willemse, from in front, slots the easy kick. 18-0

34.00: Another handling error gifts the Stormers possession.

35.00: The Reds have been poor; their tackling, dodgy and their attacking intent, non-existent.

37.00: TRY! Well, well! Caleb Timu takes Jono Lance’s switch pass and dives over the try-line, under the posts for his team’s first points. 18-5

38.00: CONVERSION! Lance adds the extras. 18-7

39.00: Pieter-Steph du Toit attempts an intercept, but loses it forward. The Reds keep the Stormers under the pump, inside their 22. Scrum to the Reds.

40.00: The half-time hooter sounds. The Reds are in possession, still in the 22.

The half-time score was Stormers 18 Reds 7

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in Cape Town.

42.00: TRY! Justin Phillips had his kicked charged down and after some pick and goes, and Alex Mafi crashes over from close range. Big turnaround, here. 18-12

43.00: CONVERSION! Lance adds another two. 18-14

47.00: Lots of substitutions being made, now. The Stormers have a scrum inside their half and win another penalty against Tupou.

49.00: Both sets of players starting to struggle with the slippery conditions. The Queenslanders have the ball.

50.00: Tate McDermott puts in a box-kick which is lost forwards by a team-mate.

51.00: It’s a bit messy, al around. Some more knock-ons lead to the Stormers getting a scrum inside the Reds half.

52.00: #ClichéAlert! You get the feeling that the next try is crucial in this game.

53.00: TRY! Raymond Rhule latches onto Craig Barry’s grubber-kick and is over, in the corner. 23-14

55.00: CONVERSION! Willemse fades his touchline conversion inside the left-hand upright. 25-14

59.00: Scott Higginbotham loses the ball in contact near the Stormers’ try-line. Willemse clears the danger.

60.00: The Stormers win a Queensland throw and counter-attack, but it goes nowhere.

64.00: The game has hit a lull after all the substitutions.

65.00: Jean-Pierre Smith is penalised at the scrum. Willemse kicks to the Reds’ 22.

67.00: A break, inside the Reds’ 22 by Damian de Allende, sees Willemse support the Bok centre on the inside, but the move breaks down when Sikhumbuzo Notshe loses the ball forward.

70.00: Stormers have a scrum on the Reds’ 5-metre line in the middle of the field. And their scrum has been dominant.

71.00: Jean-Pierre Smith is once again penalised for being on his knees, giving the Stormers another penalty after a botched attack. Scrum, again.

75.00: Time is running out for the visitors, who are penalised for the 11th time in the game, this time at the maul. The Stormers attack.

76.00: Another knock on by the Aussies gives Robbie Fleck’s team an attacking scrum inside their own 22.

77.00: Some good defending by the Reds saves another possible try. They are still in this, just.

79.00: Pieter-Steph du Toit can’t hang on to De Allende’s pass; the flanker would have been over in the corner.

80.00: TRY! Filipo Daugunu goes 90 metres, beating four defenders to reduce the lead to six. 25-19

81.00: MISS! The conversion is wide, but there is still time for the restart. 25-19

82.00: A counter-attack leads to a penalty. Lance, from halfway, kicks to about 10-metres out from the Stormers’ goal-line.

83.00: The Reds drive towards the line, they make about five metres before a counter drive halts their momentum, and the ball, and game to the home team. PHEW!

FULL-TIME.
