Super 14 commercial goes to air

More teams, more games and more excitement from bigger brighter rugby is the message in a new television commercial that went to air on the weekend as part of an exciting brand campaign for the inaugural Super 14 tournament.

The commercial is set in the unusual setting of a laundromat to convey the anticipation building ahead of Super 14 and the energy and excitement fans can expect from the new, expanded competition.

Filmed in the Ukranian capital of Kiev in late November, following the end-of-year European tours, the commercial features

  • Conrad Jantjes (Cats)
  • Jacques Cronje (Bulls)
  • Hanyani Shimange (Stormers)
  • Brent Russell (Sharks)

The Waratahs are featured in the ad but not by a known player. Waratahs back Mat Rogers, was scheduled to appear in the ad but was prevented from making the trip after sustaining an injury the night before the shoot in the Wallabies’ Test against Wales. Rogers’ place was taken by a local extra named Ouri.

“I think the fans are really going to enjoy seeing an ad with all fourteen teams represented, and hope they’re as excited about the season ahead as the players are,” said Brumbies Gerrard.

Gerrard also said he was flattered at being chosen to represent the Brumbies in the shoot and enjoyed being involved in his first rugby television commercial.

“I was pretty surprised to be asked to represent the Brumbies. There are 30 or so blokes they could have chosen and it was very flattering they picked me.”

“The shoot was one of the most unique experiences I’ve ever had. I don’t think any of the boys had ever been to Ukraine before and we didn’t really know what to expect, especially when it came to the weather.”

“It was absolutely freezing. Every time we had to strip down to our shorts and jerseys we’d all be in stitches. At least it kept us warm!”

The commerical has a funky soundtrack, written by Pat Davern and Phil Jamieson of celebrated Australian rock band Grinspoon and produced by Sydney music company Song Zu.

It is the second time the three SANZAR unions, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa have united to produce a joint commercial for the provincial tournament, the other being in 1996 to launch Super 12.

The commercial itself was developed by leading Sydney advertising agency George Patterson Y&R and directed by Melbourne-based Mark Malloy and Melbourne production company Exit Films, in conjunction with local production company Radioaktive Film in Kiev.

The new Super 14 television commercial will go to air on Foxtel and Channel Seven in Australia with tailored versions to be shown in South Africa and New Zealand.
