The South African, New Zealand and Australian Rugby Unions (SANZAR) today announced a new five-year agreement with ball suppliers GILBERT, for the inaugural Vodacom Super 14 tournament and the subsequent four years to 2010.

The agreement sees Gilbert’s Xact Match Ball retain its position as the official and exclusive ball for the best provincial Rugby competition in the world, at an historic time for the tournament following its expansion from 12 to 14 teams.

In use since the 2003 Rugby World Cup, the Gilbert Xact Match Ball has been tried and tested for kicking and handling and is currently the official match ball of New Zealand, South Africa and five of the Six Nations countries.

SANZAR and Australian Rugby Union CEO Gary Flowers said SANZAR was pleased to be entering into the new agreement, especially given Gilbert’s commitment to ball development.

‘SANZAR continues to enjoy a successful relationship with Gilbert. We were particularly impressed by Gilbert’s ongoing commitment to ball development and are happy the Super 14 teams will continue to benefit from the technological advances being made,’ Mr Flowers said.

‘A number of other high profile brands were interested in this particular category and the decision was not a simple one. However, as well as providing an excellent product and service to our teams, the Gilbert ball received a positive response from the players and for all these reasons we were delighted to extend our agreement.’

Gilbert’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Richard Gray says the company is looking forward to continuing its relationship with SANZAR and the Super 14 tournament during an exciting period for the game.

“The new Vodacom Super 14 format promises to deliver an even bigger and more exciting competition than before and we are very pleased to have retained our position as Official Supplier to the tournament,’ Mr Gray said.

‘Gilbert values our long-standing relationship with SANZAR in all territories and we look forward to taking our partnership forward as the competition continues to develop.’

‘We were once again particularly encouraged by the endorsement from the players, who have made the competition the success that it is and strongly believe this tipped the balance in our favour.’
