Tahu in the mix for Waratahs

To play Timana Tahu against the Stormers in a Super 14 rugby match at Newlands this weekend, or not to play him?

That was just one dilemma Waratahs coach Ewen McKenzie was wrestling with as his Waratahs were put through their paces for the first time since last weekend’s 16-13 loss to the Bulls.

“I am looking at form, that’s the key,” McKenzie said, adding his decision also hinged on Tahu’s “knowing and understanding [of] what we’re trying to do; I am not worried about media, or external factors”.

There is a strong case to pick Tahu, who has recently returned from his hamstring worries. In his Super 14 debut, in round one at the Sydney Football Stadium against the Hurricanes, he had two spectacular touches of the ball. Both led to tries, reports RugbyHeaven website.

However, from then until his injury just before round six, it was obvious the rugby league convert would need time to adapt to union.

It raises the question of whether the Stormers match – a major game late in the season – is the right time to throw Tahu back into the fray.

“We have to remember what he did when he was in the team,” McKenzie said.

“We were playing a different game. We did change direction, what we were trying to do.

He hasn’t actually played in that, but that can be a plus or minus.” One factor to count for Tahu as McKenzie continues to weigh up his back-line options is his State of Origin experience. He has played in hostile environments.

So what else is McKenzie weighing up?

The composition of his bench, and its ratio of forwards to backs, are certainly issues. “Whether we go with five-two, or four-three, that’ll be the first thing,” he said.

“What we think will be better on the night, if it’s a side-to-side type of game.”

Prop Matt Dunning has been ruled out because of a calf muscle strain, which opens the door for Sekope Kepu’s selection in the team. It will be named on Thursday.
