The Stormers lost three players following their hammering of the Lions on the weekend when wing Nick Koster and hooker Deon Fourie were both ruled out of the Super 14 tour to New Zealand and Australia.

Tonderai Chavhanga has been ruled out of traveling immediately with the team and will miss the flight on Thursday due to a hamstring injury but the Stormers are hopeful that he will be able to join the team in around three weeks.

Koster and Fourie both suffered knocks to their knees in Saturday’s 56-18 victory over the Lions at Newlands.

Koster was stretchered off the field after around 20 minutes and then his replacement, Chavhanga, was also injured soon after after chasing Lions centre Jaque Fourie and pulled up with a hamstring injury.

“We managed to get them to do an MRI scan late this afternoon, and Nick and Deon are out of the tour,” Stormers media manager Frikkie Erasmus told the Cape Times.

“It is a big blow as both players have been doing well.”

“Tonderai is out for two to three weeks, and it is hoped that he can then join the squad on tour.”

The Stormers did get some good news in that fullback Conrad Jantjes was passed fit to tour after struggling with a calf injury which forced him to miss the Blues, Bulls and Lions matches.

Coach Erasmus said after the Lions game that he will look at his larger training squad for the replacements. “I am glad that Nick has made it at wing, as it was a big call from us and he has done well,” he said.

“When he got injured, it was a bit of a blow for us and then we thought ‘Okay, we’ve got a world-class winger to put on’ and then in five seconds, he (Chavhanga) pulls his hamstring.

“Now the squad system, with the 36 guys in the pre-season, we will have to see.”
