Tana Umaga is in doubt for the rest of the Super 14 rugby season with a knee injury. The now retired All Blacks captain will fly home later this week after he suffered a grade one ligament tear to his left knee in the 16th minute of the Hurricanes’ 27-25 loss to the Cheetahs.

“The loss of Tana so early hit us hard, but at least we got a point out of the game. We have two more matches in South Africa and must regroup and rethink our strategy.” said Hooker Andrew Hore, who took over the Hurricanes’ captaincy during the match.

Taranaki’s Lifeimi Mafi has been called to South Africa as a replacement.Coach Colin Cooper said he hoped to have Umaga for the game against the Crusaders in Wellington on April 1.

Umaga’s injury is on the same knee that killed World Cup in Australia in 2003.

“It’s a huge loss,” he eventually settled on, “both on and off the field.” said Cooper
