Umaga planing to leave Super 14 & move North ?

Tana Umaga’s career is in the spotlight again as conjecture continues around the All Black captain’s future. He has now been linked with a move to join former team-mate Andrew Mehrtens at Harlequins.

Umaga has made no comment and his agent Roberto Brady, speaking to an Auckland newspaper, would only say: ‘It’s business as usual.’

However, the paper ran quotes from a source at Harlequins stating coach Dean Richards was determined to reunite Umaga with Mehrtens, while also signing Leeds’ Justin Marshall.

“Dean has his heart set on a three-pronged All Black back core,” said the unnamed “insider”.“There are 21 former All Blacks playing in England, France, Wales and Ireland and that is one of the selling points to Umaga. He would be among friends in this part of the world.”

Strengthening the rumour is another rumour that Mehrtens has applied for South African citizenship as South Africans can play in English clubs as locals freeing up one extra place for an overseas player.

Mehrtens was born in Durban South Africa but moved to new Zealand at an early age.
