Former Cheetahs and Leopards prop Ronnie Uys, has joined the Pumas rugby franchise for the rest of the year after a season with French club Tarbes.

Uys played Super Rugby for the Cheetahs last season and is a terrific ball-carrier and a powerful scrummager at loose-head. He has also represented the Wildebeests and the Griffons while contracted by the Cheetahs.

The 30-year old Uys is in the best shape of his life and a major boost to the Pumas who have also contracted the versatile MJ Mentz from Italy. Mentz made his debut from the bench against the Valke.

The Pumas travel to Port Elizabeth this weekend to meet the Elephants after destroying the Valke 79-26 in the first match in the First Division.

Uys will compete with big Dawie Steyn for a place in the starting XV and will probably have to start on the bench.

The Pumas are one of the early favourites in the First Division, but the Elephants have also contracted a number of players and could be a hard nut to crack on home soil.
