Highlanders wing Fetu’u Vainikolo has been fined and handed a suspension after his involvement in an early morning bar incident last weekend.

A member of the public issuied a complaint to the Highlanders about Vainikolo’s behaviour at a Dunedin bar early last Saturday morning after he had thrown a drink over a woman.

Vainikolo met with NZRU General Manager Professional Rugby Neil Sorensen and Highlanders team manager Greg O’Brien on Thursday.

Sorensen said that after considering all of the facts and circumstances of Vainikolo’s conduct, the incident was deemed to be serious misconduct under the Player’s Collective Employment Agreement.

The result is that Vainikolo got a NZ $1000 fine and suspended him for the match against the Hurricanes this weekend. He will be replaced on the bench by Kendrick Lynn.

Furthermore he will have to undertake appropriate counselling for alcohol and behaviour management and he has received a formal warning about future similar misconduct.

Sorensen pointed out that Vainikolo had met with the woman and apologised for his behaviour and that this had been accepted.
