Springbok flanker Wikus van Heerden has been “rewarded” for being axed from the Springbok Tri-Nations squad with the news that he is the favourite to captain the Blue Bulls in the early part of the Currie Cup season.

Van Heerden and Wayne Julies (centre) were released from duty with the national squad for the home leg of the Tri-Nations series – which start when the Boks host the Wallabies at Newlands on Saturday.

The two discarded Boks, Van Heerden and Julies, are available when the Bulls start the defence of the crown they share with the Cheetahs.

The Bulls start their campaign with a home game against the Falcons next Friday, June 22.

The Bulls’ official website revealed that Van Heerden is expected to take over the captaincy.

Blue Bulls coach Pote Human said Van Heerden has a commendable track record as captain of the Lions and Cats.

Human said it was good news that both Van Heerden and Julies would be available for at least the first two Currie Cup games of the season.

Another development is that scrum-half Nicholas Eyre will miss the matches against the Falcons in Pretoria and Griquas in Kimberley as he recovers from a groin injury.
