The HSBC Waratahs have confirmed their pre-season schedule for 2009, playing three trials in the lead up to the Super 14.

The Waratahs will kick off their campaign on Saturday 24 January in Toowoomba where they will take on the Queensland Reds at Gold Park.

They then head to Newcastle to take on the Fiji Warriors at EnergyAustralia Stadium on Friday 30 January, before their final pre-season hit-out against the Brumbies at the Sydney Football Stadium on Thursday 5 February, nine days before their Super 14 opener against the Hurricanes in Wellington.

‘We’ve once again worked hard with the team and the unions we are playing trials against to ensure the Waratahs have a high quality preparation and a great platform from which to launch the 2009 Super 14 campaign,’ said Jim L’Estrange, NSWRU Chief Executive Officer.

‘NSW Rugby’s growing association with the Fiji Rugby Union has resulted in the clash with the Fiji Warriors at EnergyAustralia Stadium. This is set to be a fantastic occasion with the Newcastle Hunter zone of NSW Country Rugby right on board in hosting the clash.

‘The Junior Waratahs only defeated the Warriors by three points in October so the stage is set for a great game.

‘Following the success of the clash with the Reds at Campbelltown on Australia Day this year, we are delighted to head to Toowoomba play Queensland in our first trial, while the final trial against the Brumbies at the SFS with both sides having all their internationals back will provide a great entree to the 2009 season.’
