The HSBC Waratahs have been forced into a late change ahead of their week eight Super 14 blockbuster with the Blues at the Sydney Football Stadium, with Rocky Elsom ruled out of the clash with a leg injury.

The Wallaby flanker pulled up sore from training on Thursday, with scans revealing a grade two tear of the quadricep which will keep him sidelined for the next month.

‘Rocky’s one of the form players of the competition and one of our leaders so he’s a big loss,’ said Head Coach Ewen McKenzie.

‘The upside is that David Lyons returns this week so in terms of the personnel change we’re essentially replacing a 30-cap Wallaby with a 40-cap Wallaby.’

Elsom’s injury will see Dean Mumm move to flanker, while lock Will Caldwell has been recalled from club duties with Sydney University to take his place in the starting lineup.

‘Will’s played every match for us so far this year so he’ll slot straight back in next to Vickerman in the second row.’
