Match Preview

The Waratahs have only picked up one win in seven trips to Wellington against the Hurricanes. That one win came in 2007 and  was their most recent trip to Wellington.

The Hurricanes lost Piri Weepu early on Friday which will no doubt have effected their planning.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick off. A minute silence is held for the Australian bush fire victims.

.01 The match is underway.

.55: The Hurricanes win a scrum 5m out from the Tahs line. It goes down and has to be reset. Twice.

.00: The Hurricanes win the scrum eventually and Gear has a run at the line but is caught.

.00: An interesting point is that as SANZAR have opted to go with referee appointments based on performance,  Sydney based Stuart Dickinson is reffing a match with a Sydney team in it. I think we will need to keep a close eye on Mr.Dickinson.

.00: Possession is already well in favour of the Hurricanes as they Waratahs put in a big amount of tackles.

.00: Wow, against the play the Waratahs construct a beauty of a try from a Rob Horne pass as Sam Norton-Knight dives in under the posts for the Waratahs first try.

.00: Kurtley Beale slots the conversion.

.00: Possession starts to even out as the Waratahs come more into the game and also start levelling off the territory stats.

.00: The Hurricanes pick up a penalty so they go for posts. Daniel Kirkpatrick’s kick hits the post and misses.

.00: The Waratahs swing the ball out to the line but the ball goes forward and the movement is lost.

.00: Kurtley Beale breaks and passes to Lote Tuqiri who outpaces everyone and dives over in the corner. Great try.

.00: Kurtley Beale slots the conversion.

.00: Lots of early kicking from the Hurricanes which is giving the Waratahs the ball.

.00: The Hurricanes go on attack, Nonu tries the grubber after a Guildford break but the grubber goes into Lachie Turner’s (the fastest Tah Back) hand and he sets off leaving everyone cold to score the Waratahs third try.

.00: Kurtley Beale misses the conversion.

.00: The Hurricanes try to attack but the Waratahs show that they have some defensive skills too this year.

.00:The Waratahs crush the Hurricanes scrum but the ball comes out messy so there is a chip ahead, Beale chases and tries to clear with a kick but it gets charged down and Daniel Kirkpatrick pounces to score the Canes first try.

.00: His conversion hits the post.

.00:  Hurricanes go on attack but the Waratahs defence is outstanding. The pressure just sees the Hurricanes going from side to side and going forward nowhere.

.00: The whistle goes for half time.

The half time score is Hurricanes 5 Waratahs 19

The second half is underway.

.00: The wind has died down a little in the second half.

.00: The Hurricanes keep the pressure up but that Waratahs defence seems to have all the answers.

.00: Canes coach Colin Cooper sends on a number of replacements and it fires some energy into the Canes who dive over the line for a try – well if they had not been called back for a forward pass it would have been.

.00: Much more urgency and bite from the Hurricanes all of a sudden.

.00: Fava comes off for the Tahs so big Wycliff Palu comes on.

.00: The Hurricanes win a penalty so Daniel Kirkpatrick has another shot at goal and this time it’s straight down the centre for the first points of the second half.

.00: Tahu comes off the for the Waratahs as does Tatafu Polota-Nau.

.00: Sam Norton-Knight has a run down the line but kicks the ball out on the full for the second time.

.00: Territory for the Hurricanes is at 70% for this half but the only thing they have to show for it is a penalty.

.00: The Waratahs are starting to rack up a hefty count of free kicks against them as Captain Phil Waugh goes off to the blood bin looking pretty worse for wear.

.00: It had to happen. The Waratahs defence got a little sucked in as Hooker Dane Coles who is making his super 14 debut scores for the Canes. Where do the Canes find these try scoring hookers ?

.00: Daniel Kirkpatrick kicks the conversion to cut the lead to 4.

.00: Oh wow. The Waratahs fire straight back with some class. Beale puts in the boot for Turner who gets in a great pass for Rob Horne who runs in a classy try.

.00: Beale’s conversion slides between the posts to extend the lead back to a comfortable place.

.00: Well, well, well. Touche say the Hurricanes as they to fire straight back with a fast try from Hosea Gear to cut that lead back down.

.00: Daniel Kirkpatrick kicks the conversion to cut the lead back down to four. Exciting stuff this.

.00: The Waratahs give away a penalty for wheeling the scrum in centre field.

.00: The Hurricanes set up their attack in the Waratahs 25. The forwards make slow but sure progress towards the centre. They are called back for a penalty.

.00: They need five points so they go for the line out.

.00: The Waratahs win the ball back and get a fee kick so Beale clears.

.00: Free kick to the Hurricanes. They have 10 seconds left so they run it.

.00: The siren goes, but the Waratahs steal it and kick it out.

Full report to follow.

The final score is Hurricanes 22 Waratahs 26
