Blues beat Waratahs in Sydney

The Waratahs and the Blues both head into this match on the back of wins last week but the Blues will have more confidence having beaten the top Australian side the Brumbies.

The Waratahs came from behind to beat the Reds last week but that was only their third win in nine matches. The Waratahs are second in the Australian conference
but they are 13th overall.

We are waiting for the kick off.

The Blues kick off and the match is underway.

2.00: The Blues make a strong start to the match but going through 14 phases and working the ball to the Waratahs 22m line where they win a penalty. The Blues will have a shot at the posts.

3.00: Piers Francis slots the penalty kick as the rain starts to come down. Incidentally both teams are playing in blue which could become confusing for the teams.

7.00: Penalty to the Blues against Tolu Latu just inside the Waratahs 22.

8.00: Francis lines up the penalty kick. He nails it.

11.00: It’s all the Blues. The Blues put the Waratahs under pressure in their 22.

14.00: From a scrum on the 5m line the Blues flirt with the Waratahs tryline through six phases before the ball is turned over and kicked upfield into safety.

15.00: The Waratahs come away with the ball after a Blues line out. The Waratahs run the ball but get caught and knock on.

16.00: The Blues win the scrum and chip the ball over the Waratahs backs – behind Folau and into touch.

17.00: the Waratahs win the line out but slice it into touch.

18.00: Another soft penalty – player leaving his feet – to the Blues. Francis will have a shot.

19.00: Francis nails the kick and extends the lead.

20.00: The Blues get their hands on a looese ball after as slip by Jake Gordon. Rieko Ioane gets the ball and races down the line and scores the opening TRY!

22.00: Francis adds the conversion.

25.00: The Blues win a line out in the Waratahs 22 but the ball goes dead so the Waratahs get the scrum put in.

28.00; The Waratahs win the scrum and get the ball downfield. The Blues run it back into the Waratahs 22 where the Waratahs turn the ball over and they boot it into touch.

29.00: The Blues win the line out but again the ball goes dead. Waratahs scrum.

31.00: The Waratahs get the ball in their half but again the ball is slices into touch giving the Blues an attacking line out in the Waratahs half.

32.00: The Blues are awarded another penalty in front. Francis slots the penalty.

36.00: Sonny Bill Williams takes a blow in a tackle and has to leave the field. Melani Nanai comes on while Williams goes to the head bin.

38.00: Penalty to the Blues. The Blues run the ball and Francis gets through a gap and offloads to Scott Scrafton who scores the second TRY! Penalty count 6-0 to the Blues.

39.00: Francis adds the conversion.

40.00: The siren sounds and Francis boots the ball into touch.

The Waratahs kick off and the second half is underway. Sonny Bill Williams is staying off after failing the concussion test.

41.00: The Waratahs hold on to the ball – unlike what they have been doing so far – and Israel Folau breaks for the corner and is tackled by three players but gets over to score. TRY!

42.00: Bernard Foley misses the conversion. To the left.

47.00: Penalty to the Waratahs for offside. Foley kicks for touch instead of going for posts and sets up the line out.

48.00: The Waratahs win the line out but then get blown up for truck and trailer in the maul. The Blues try clear the ball into touch but so the Waratahs counter attack by running the ball.

50.00: The Waratahs go through 9 phases on attack and Jed Holloway almost gets through to score but is stopped. The Waratahs then win a penalty and take the line out option.

52.00: The Waratahs win the line out and put the Blues try line under pressure. The Waratahs move the ball across the face of the posts but the Blues hold them out.

53.00: The Blues hold the Waratahs out through 10 phases after which the ball is kicked too deep. The Blues restart with a 22 drop and the Waratahs try to counter attack but after 2 phases they lose the ball to the Blues who kick deep.

55.00; Penalty to the Waratahs against Francis. The Waratahs take the line out which they win and attack the Blues try line.

56.00: The Waratahs have several goes at the line and Tolu Latu goes over to score. The TMO will decide. The TRY is awarded.

57.00: Foley adds the conversion.

61.00: Out of almost nothing the Blues hit back as Rieko Ioane gets the ball from a ruck and races to the line and scores. TRY! His second.

63.00: Francis adds the conversion.

65.00: The Blues break through again and this time its Akira Ioane races for the line and scores. TRY!

66.00: Francis slots the conversion.

68.00: The Waratahs hit back by working the ball into the Blues 22. Bernard Foley slips through a gap and scores. He converts his own try.

71.00: Penalty to the Waratahs. They kick to the corner.

73.00: The Waratahs go through the phases inside the Blues 22. Folau slips through on the wings and grabs a chip kick ball and scores. TRY! His second.

74.00:Foley adds the conversion.

78.00: the Waratahs work the ball to the Blues tryline and they drive over. Will Skelton goes over and scores. The TMO is called in to check the grounding. No try as he lost the ball. 5m scrum.

80.00: As the siren sounds the Waratahs send Paddy Ryan crashing over. TRY!

81.00: Foley adds the conversion.

Thats it the Blues have won.
