The Waratahs have played the Sharks 20 times in Super Rugby since 1998, the Tahs have won 12 matches, drawn two and lost six times.
The New South Wales Waratahs’ 12 wins out of 20 matches gives them a 60% winning record against the Sharks regardless of venue.
- The NSW Waratahs have won their last eight home games against the Sharks, their previous defeat at home to the Durban club coming back in 2000.
- New South Wales will be facing South African opposition for the first time this season.
- NSW have won one of their last seven games against sides from the Republic (D1, L5), that victory coming against the Stormers in February 2018.
- No side has scored more tries in the opening quarter of games this season than the Sydney side, who have crossed eight times in that period (level with Highlanders and Brumbies).
- The Sharks have lost their last two matches in Australia; they’ve not lost more consecutive games down under since a run of four straight defeats across the 2008 and 2009 campaigns.
- Michael Hooper has made the most tackles of any player this year (122), the Sharks’ Daniel du Preez has made the most carries of any forward in 2019 (106).
We are waiting for the kickoff.
.00: PEEEEP! We are underway at a new Super Rugby venue at Bankwest Stadium, Parramatta.
.00: Curwin Bosch is starting his first game at flyhalf since 2017. Louis Schreuder is on the bench so the Sharks are captained by Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira.
.00: A long advantage for an indiscretion at the ruck by the Sharks ends after a 12-phase attack from the Waratahs. Bernard Foley kicks to the corner.
.00: A missed opportunity for the Tahs after they lose their first lineout because Damien Fitzpatrick overthrew his jumpers.
.00: The Sydney franchise is trying to stretch the attack to the wide channels in these early stages. Mtawarira is caught going off his feet at the ruck. Michael Hooper decides to take a shot at goal, this time.
.00: PENALTY! Foley puts his team on the scoreboard, and “My Hero” by the Foo Fighters blasts through the stadium’s PA. 3-0
.00: Both sides are not committing too many bodies to the breakdown, instead, they are using their ball carriers around the fringes and in the wide channels.
.00: A scrum to the Tahs ends with a kicking contest. Kurtley Beale boots the ball to halfway.
.00: Lukhanyo Am breaks Karmichael Hunt’s tackle and races into the 22. The Waratahs’ scramble defence stops Makazole Mapimpi from scoring, but the hosts give away a penalty.
.00: Bosch kicks to the corner.
.00: TRY! Daniel du Preez dives over under the posts to register his sixth Super Rugby try of the season. He broke Michael Wells’ tackle after a strong carry by Thomas du Toit was stopped short of the line. 3-5
.00: CONVERSION! Bosch adds the extras. 3-7
.00: Superb defence by the Sharks. Aphelele Fassi chases the kick, he holds up Adam Ashley-Cooper in the tackle and wins the scrum.
.00: BIG SCRUM! Harry Johnson-Holmes gets the better of Du Toit and wins the penalty when the South African loses his bind, collapsing the scrum.
.00: Oh dear! The Sharks look to counter-attack after Jean-Luc du Preez won the turnover, however, Dan du Preez breaks around to the blindside and throws the pass into touch.
.00: HUGE HIT! Cam Clarke absolutely smokes Mapimpi – who is down receiving treatment – with a blindside hit. The winger never saw him coming. It brought loud cheers from the Parramatta crowd.
.00: The Sharks have the scrum, however. It is reset. The ball is cleared to the Tahs’ half.
.00: TRY! Jake Gordon scores the first Super Rugby try at Bankwest Stadium. The Waratahs suck in the opposition, Gordon looked up and broke blind. The scrumhalf played Curtis Rona, who raced into the Sharks’ 22 before drawing Sbu Nkosi and putting Gordon away in the corner. 8-7
.00: CONVERSION! Foley slots the wide conversion. 10-7
.00: The Sharks win a penalty just outside the Tahs’ 22. Beast opts for a shot at goal.
.00: PENALTY! Bosch levels the scores. 10-all
.00: A bit of kicking for territory from both sides before a water break after a player gets seen to by the medics.
.00: The visitors have a scrum on the halfway line. It goes down again, and the Sharks get the free-kick.
.00: The ball is kicked away by the Sharks, the Waratahs gather and launch a counter-attack. Beale looks up, sees the space behind Nkosi and Fassi, and executes a pin-point kick to the corner.
.00: The Sharks defensive line is reading the Waratahs attack. They use the rush-defence, well and are good at holding up the runners.
.00: For all the territory and possession, the Australians cannot convert pressure into points.
.00: It’s a bit scrappy; Mapimpi is tackled into touch by Clarke after a turnover at the breakdown. Hooper takes a quick throw, but the skipper’s pass only finds an opposition player. The ball is lost forward after a game of ‘hot potato’ before the hooter sounds.
The halftime score was Waratahs 10 Sharks 10
.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in Australia. The score is level, but the Waratahs have had the better of the play in the first 40 minutes, they just cannot convert their territorial advantage into points.
.00: The Tahs continue to play for field position, kicking high balls on the visitors’ wingers.
.00: Du Toit is down receiving treatment. The Sharks’ back three have been good under the high ball, but I reckon the Aussie halfbacks will continue to go to the air and hope for an error.
.00: MASSIVE MOMENT! Jed Holloway elbowed Du Toit after the tighthead pulled his jersey, stopping the lock from chasing the box-kick. Holloway is sent off and Du Toit gets a yellow. Big call by the referee Nic Berry. The Sharks are awarded the penalty, and they will take a shot.
.00: RED CARD! Holloway. YELLOW CARD! Du Toit.
.00: MISS! Bosch pushes the kick, wide. 10-all
.00: The Sharks win another penalty, and Bosch calls for the tee. They are trying to run the clock down while they have a man in the bin.
.00: MISS! Oh boy, Bosch cuts his kick across the uprights. 10-all
.00: Andre Esterhuizen breaks, passes to Mapimpi, but the winger drops the ball forward. The ref comes back for a previous penalty.
.00: YELLOW CARD! Jack Dempsey is sent to the naughty step for a spear tackle on Nkosi. 10-all
.00: Bosch will not take a shot at goal, instead, he kicks to the corner.
.00: TRY! Esterhuizen barges his way over the try-line. Foley and Johnson-Holmes try to hold him up, but the TMO tells Mr Berry to overturn his call. 10-15
.00: CONVERSION! Bosch finds his radar from in front. 10-17
.00: The gaps are everywhere, now. It’s just a question of whether or not the Sharks can exploit them.
.00: superb work by Hunt, who won the turnover and penalty at the ruck. Foley kicks to the opposition’s 10m.
.00: Mapimpi chases Louis Schreuder’s kick, but some good scramble defence by Beale, who tackles the wing into touch.
.00: The Tahs are hanging in, they have done well despite being a man down.
.00: SCRUM-PENALTY! The Waratahs collapse the set-piece, giving Bosch a chance to extend his side’s lead.
.00: PENALTY! Bosch finally lands a penalty, and it was a long-range effort from 53 metres, out. 10-20
.00: Another big scrum; another penalty for the Sharks. A scuffle breaks out afterwards as tempers flare.
.00: PENALTY! Bosch slots the kick, extending his side’s lead. 10-23
.00: The Tahs win a penalty, and they go quickly. The Sharks are holding them out.
.00: NO TRY! The home support thinks their team has scored, but the TMO rules in favour of the tourists. 10-23
.00: Scrum, five, to the Tahs.
.00: MASSIVE SCRUM! The visitors win another scrum-penalty and will hang on for the win.
.00: The Sharks are leaking penalties, the ref has given Schreuder a final warning. Foley kicks to the corner.
.00: TRY! Foley darts to his right and goes over for a deserved try. The conversion is important because it will mean a losing bonus-point. 15-23
.00: MISS! Foley is almost charged down, he pushes the kick wide and there will be no bonus point. 15-23
