HSBC Waratahs skipper Phil Waugh is heading for surgery on Thursday after consulting a Sydney specialist today.
Medial ligament damage to Waugh’s left ankle has been confirmed (arsing from Saturday’s clash with the Cheetahs in Kimberley) but NSW doctor, Sharron Flahive, said the MRI results will be assessed once more by a radiologist before confirming the operation.
However, the surgery is almost certain to proceed and will mean three months on the sideline for Waugh.
“The Waratahs have lost a very important player and leader but three months gives Phil plenty of time to keep his World Cup aspirations alive and we are fully supportive of that,” said NSW head coach Ewen McKenzie.
