HSBC Waratahs doctor Sharron Flahive says an operation to repair ligament damage in Phil Waugh’s left ankle was a success and the NSW skipper has already begun his recovery, expected to take three months.

“Surgery was definitely the right option for Phil,’ said Dr Flahive.

“The damage was severe but the medial ligament has been repaired and we are optimistic about a quick recovery.’

Head coach Ewen McKenzie says Waugh could be available for the Waratahs in May.

“At this point he’s out for three months but with Phil’s dedication and our advanced rehabilitation programme run by Charlie Higgins we’re not ruling out a return sometime in May,’ said McKenzie.

An acting captain will be announced on Sunday.
