Despite some reports to the contrary, the Crusaders are not yet certain of a semi-final position, but they will enter round 11 of the Super 14 with a major prize to play for.

A maximum-point success against the Sharks at AMI Stadium will take the log-leaders to 48 points. If the Crusaders win it would not only lock up a semi-final position, but also ensure that the match will be played in Christchurch.

This is because the addition of five points would put the front-runners beyond the reach of all but the second-placed Waratahs, in terms of the maximum log points that are still available to be earned, with each team having three matches remaining.

The best each of the third-placed Chiefs and Sharks (32 log points) can achieve is 47, which is a total the Crusaders will surpass if five championship points are claimed in the next round.

Should the Crusaders win two of their remaining three matches ‘ even without the addition of bonus points, they would virtually be assured of the top qualifying position for the semi-finals, and the potential home advantage for the final, which that seeding carries.

The final three weeks of the competition have arrived with nine teams still mathematically in the semi-final fight, although the prospects of the eight-placed Blues (26 points) and ninth placed Western Force (24 points) seem remote at best.

The final three rounds do promise further intrigue, especially as the Waratahs and Chiefs both have two matches to play in South Africa, and are away for their last three, which offers hope to the teams currently ranked below them.
