The Canterbury Crusaders and New South Wales Waratahs asserted their superiority on the Super 14 competition over the weekend with victories that almost sealed them a spot in the semi finals.

It’s looking like the teams that get a play place will need just over 40 points to be in with a place.

The Crusaders are still unbeaten and the Waratahs beat a determined Brumbies side which gave them 2nd place on the table.

The Crusaders now have 40 points and the Waratahs have 38 points with matches in hand. The Hurricanes have 33 points but still have to play the Reds in Wellington. The Reds lost Latham this week so they should win that one…….. even if he returns.

The Hurricanes still have to face the Highlanders and the Waratahs. Two wins and a “within 7 bonus point” from their remaining matches should seal their spot.

The Waratahs look like they need one win from one of their remaining matches which are the Highlanders, Hurricanes and the Chiefs. Three “within 7 bonus points” would probably see them home too.

So the top three teams being the Crusaders, Waratahs and the Hurricanes look to have done the hard work and are safe.

So who will the fourth team be ? The Brumbies have three of their remaining matches left at home but they have lost Larkham. Giteau could stand in but “Bernie” is a big loss for them.

From the South African teams only the Bulls and the Sharks look good enough and they still have to play each other which means that they both cant go through if the Hurricanes have a shocker end.

The best traveling SA team this year has been the Sharks so the best hope for SA would be the Sharks. The Blues could do it but they lost Tipoki last week and he has been in form for them scoring three tries last week alone. They really should have done more earlier in the season.

The Chiefs and Highlanders could also do it but its hard to look past the Brumbies due to their draw and they are on 28 points. 6 more than Sharks, Chiefs, Blues and Highlanders. With three games in hand at home and a 5 point lead on the Bulls their depth will be tested but it should be enough.

Our pick

Team 1 – Crusaders
Team 2 – Waratahs
Team 3 – Hurricanes
Team 4 – Brumbies
