Lions beat Southern Kings in Johannesburg

South Africa’s top Super Rugby team over the last two years the Lions are at home in Johannesburg on Sunday this weekend and they host the Southern Kings.

The Lions have only played the Southern Kings three times in Super Rugby but all three matches have been won by the Lions comfortably.

We are waiting for the kick off. The teams are coming on to the field.

The Southern Kings kick off and the match is underway.

2.00: The Southern Kings win a penalty from the scrum. They choose to kick for touch and take the line out.

7.00: The Lions work the ball to the Kings tryline. They go wide but the Kings stop their attack. The Lions get called back for a penalty.

8.00: The Lions take the line out but then at the line out Irne Herbst is yellow carded.

9.00: the Lions win the line out again. The ball comes out slowly and the Lions win another penalty. The Kings get another warning.

10.00: the Lions drive over the line and Andries Ferreira scores. TRY!

11.00: Elton Jantjies hits the post from in front with the conversion.

13.00: The Kings kick deep at the restart. The Lions kick the ball back but the Kings press the Lions back to their 22m line. Forward pass.

17.00: The Lions go through several phases and get the ball down into the Kings 22. The Kings however turn the ball over and kick it almost to the half way line and into touch.

19.00: The Lions move the ball from the line out from one side to the other with a cross kick. Whiteley out on the wing offloads to Courtnall Skosan who races for the line and scores. TRY!

20.00: Jamties takes the conversion kick and nails it.

26.00: The Kings get the ball into the Lions 22. They spread the ball wide but as they attack the Lions push them out of their 22.

28.00: Penalty to the Kings. They will have a shot at the posts.

29.00: Pieter-Steyn de Wet takes the kick, nails it and the Kings are on the board.

30.00: Lionel Mapoe makes a break but is caught. At the breakdown referee Jaco Peyper saw something and asks the TMO to review for foul play. Replays show that Robbie Coetzee knees a Kings player in the head but before that Chris Cloete charged into the ruck. Chris Cloete is yellow carded. Robbie Coetzee gets red.

34.00: The Kings go through the phases trying to get into the Lions half but the Lions keep them pinned back.

35.00: The Kings get to the half way line but the Lions turn the ball over and the ball goes into touch.

39.00: The Lions break out and Mapoe gets the Lions into the Kings 22. The ball is recycled and the Lions go wide, the Kings however intercept and race upfield. They are caught and the Lions counter attack and Kwagga Smith gets into space and scores. TRY!

40.00: Jantjies adds the conversion. It’s half time.

Jantjies kicks off and the second half is underway.

41.00: The Lions get the perfect start as they set up a maul and drive over the Kings tryline. Malcolm Marx is the try scorer.

42.00: Jantjies takes the kick from the touchline and nails it.

45.00: Scrum penalty to the Kings near the half way line. They kick for touch and take the line out.

47.00: The Kings win the line out and make some ground. They win another penalty and tap the ball. The ball is lost on the 5m line and the Lions get the ball and make it safe.

50.00: The Lions win the ball from a line out gone wrong by the Kings. Kwagga Smith makes ground but is stopped short but offloads to Jacques van Rooyen who is also stopped before the line but he rolls over in the tackle and scores. TRY !

51.00: Jantjies adds the conversion.

54.00: The Lions attack down the wing passing from one to another as they get closer to the line, the Kings run out of defenders and Kwagga Smith goes over for his second TRY!

56.00: Jantjies takes the conversion kick and nails it.

60.00: The Lions go through the phases on attack but as they start to look likely to score the Kings get an intercept and Luzuko Vulindlu scores the Kings first TRY.

61.00: De wet adds the conversion.

64.00: Elton Jantjies has been replaced.

68.00: The Lions have gone to the bench replacing most of their stars.

71.00: The Kings work the ball into the Lions 22. They try to attack but get called back for a penalty.

72.00: The Kings kick for touch and take the line out.

74.00: The Kings are still camped in the Lions 22 but the Lions are keeping them out.

77.00: The Lions get the ball inside the Kings half and Johannes Jonker makes a break and offloads to Faf de Klerk who scores. TRY!

78.00: Andries Coetzee adds the conversion.

79.00: The Kings get back into the Lions 22 and go through the phases.

80.00: The siren sounds but the Kings want another try.  They continue to attack but get stuck on the Lions 22m line.

81.00: the Lions turn the ball over and run it out of their 22 – Andries Coetzee gets into space and runs for the line and scores. TRY!

82.00: Coetzee adds the conversion.

That’s it the Lions have won.
