Reds beat Waratahs in Sydney

on

The Queensland Reds have won three of their last four Super Rugby matches against the NSW Waratahs (L1) including the last two meetings, after losing 11 consecutive games against them prior.

The Queensland Reds will be aiming for back-to-back away victories against the NSW Waratahs in Super Rugby for the first time since July 2013, following their 46-14 win in their most recent such fixture (March 2021).

  • The NSW Waratahs will be looking to log back-to-back Super Rugby wins for the first time since August 2020 after opening their 2022 Super Rugby Pacific season with a 40-10 win over the Fijian Drua; the last time the NSW Waratahs scored 40+ points in consecutive Super Rugby games was in July 2016.
  • The Tahs have lost their last eight Super Rugby games against fellow Australian sides – their longest-ever losing streak in such fixtures – while the Reds have won nine of their last 10 Australian derbies (L1).
  • The Queensland Reds have won only four of their last 18 Super Rugby games played as the away team on the day (D1, L13) and have lost their last three games on the bounce when on the road.
  • NSW made 4.6m per carry in the opening round of the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific campaign, the most of any team in the competition and 1.2m per carry more than the Reds (3.4m).
  • Jake Gordon gained 20 metres per carry from his five carries in the opening round of the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific campaign, more than any other player in the competition.
  • Jock Campbell and Izaia Perese each beat six defenders in the opening round of the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific season, more than any other players in the competition.
  • Angus Bell has scored one try in three of his last four Super Rugby games and finished with one try and one try assist in the opening round of the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific campaign.
  • Harry Wilson made 15 carries and 16 tackles in Round 1 of the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific campaign, one of five players to make 10+ in both categories; it’s the fourth time in his last five appearances that he’s achieved the double.

21.00: CONVERSION! The kick is good. 0-10

24.00: Another series of penalties on the Reds’ try line leads to the referee speaking to captain Tate McDermott. The last time the Tahs had the penalty, they went for poles instead of taking the scrum on the opposition’s 5m.

25.00: TRY! Jake Gordon’s decision to scrum works a treat as Will Harris regathered the ball from the back of the set-piece after McDermott knocked the ball out, broke blind and barged his way over the line. 5-10

26.00: CONVERSION! Donaldson adds the extras. 7-10

29.00: Despite the wet and slippery conditions, both teams are doing well. The lineouts have been a problem for the Reds, who have lost two because of the rain.

32.00: Donaldson’s grubber is collected by O’Connor before James Turner reached the ball.

35.00: A 13-phase attack inside the Reds’ 22 comes to nothing after a knock-on by NSW.

37.00: The Reds lead, but they have made more handling errors (4-2), turned the ball over more (5-4), and have only made 19 passes to 104.

38.00: Gordon is pinged under his posts for not releasing in the tackle, the Tahs opt for the points before the break.

38.00: PENALTY! Donaldson levels the scores. 10-10

40.00: McDermott is off injured for the Reds. The home team has had 70% possession and 75% territory. Donaldson kicks to the 22 because of the heavy conditions.

41.00: Nothing comes of the final attack.

The halftime score was New South Wales 10 Queensland 10
